hello and welcome i'm laughing at the beginning i just because i know what i'm going to say it's not even funny but what i'm going to say is just there's a squeaky dog in the garden it sounds more like a squeaky toy than a dog it's not in my garden it's like a garden over there somewhere but it's causing the other dog in the garden to bark you could argue perhaps not the not the best time to be making a recording but i'm not sure how how loud it is to be honest i don't think the squeaky one is particularly loud but if you hear a little then you'll know what it is it's basically a squeaky dog or is a person in the garden just squeezing a squeaky toy yeah could be that if i'm honest i'm not sure um but the way it's yeah i think it is a dog because it's like i don't know what kind of dog makes that type of noise but it is it's kind of funny so um welcome this is let me bore you to sleep it is trivia tuesday time trivia trivia trivia tuesday and yeah i know that was very so it was a bit too romantic wasn't it that song um my name is jason new land please only listen when you can safely close your eyes my website is jason newland.
com this is let me bore you to sleep if i've not mentioned that i lose track of what i've already said i've only been talking for two minutes and what else i have a youtube channel which you can listen to all of my recordings so with 3 000 recordings on there and i upload my recordings to my website they also get uploaded to the youtube channel there's i've got an what have i got instagram x and tiktok where i upload one recording a day as well there's a bit of a backlog on those ones because i've been making more than one recording a day so i'm quite a few recordings behind on that one but it's okay i don't want to put more than one a day on there and what else i've got a facebook group called jason newland's boring group and i share my latest recordings on facebook i've got a few pages on there actually just been watching at home with the furies on netflix there was a bit in it and it's like Tyson Fury it's basically it's about Tyson Fury and his 600 children and he's moaning about all the chores that need to be doing and he said it's easier to be boxing because he retired this is one of his retirements he said it's easier to be boxing than or in a training camp than to be doing all these household chores and i'm thinking why are you doing the household chores why i wouldn't do it if i had if i had millions of pounds in the bank i wouldn't even get myself dressed i wouldn't wash myself honestly i'd have someone else do everything for me i wouldn't be cutting the grass or washing the cars or picking up the weeds from i wouldn't do any of that i don't do any of that stuff now but i wouldn't why would you what's the point in having huge amounts of money in the bank if you're going to be doing those kinds of stuff those kinds of things especially if you don't like doing them it's different if you enjoy it i mean i know some people that say that they enjoy cleaning how is that even possible how i know i realize you can't actually answer me but i'm still going to pause and wait for an answer because i can't i can't fathom it oh i got a story about a word fathom oh yes it's very boring just don't worry don't get too excited i was on holiday in france with a person that we picked up basically i was getting a lift to kent and my landlord was going away for a week and didn't want to leave me in the house so um i got a lift to kent i was gonna camp in a campsite somewhere i don't know i was 18 i really didn't know what i was doing really to be honest and on the way we picked up or they picked up a hitchhiker who ended up being a very close friend for a long time but anyway he we got talking he kept sort of asking me questions and i was like what do you want go away because he sat down next to me and he's all friendly and i just like why why did you have to pick this person up he was really friendly and kind is i just i wasn't a big fan of meeting new people back then i'm not sure if i still am but or if i am ever been but it's because he's like was really almost forcing a relationship a conversation and i didn't want to have a conversation i just wanted to close my eyes and pretend it wasn't happening you know and that's a bit like a wedding night but no i've not been married how would i know so i ended up going to france with him so obviously i changed my mind about him fairly quickly because ultimately i had nothing else to do and nothing better to do i was literally going to be camping in a field somewhere and so i just said yeah i might as well come to france with you so we went to france in them days you didn't even need your passport you just i don't think because why would i have a passport i didn't even get my first passport until i was 23 so 1994 was the first time i got a passport before that i never had a passport and you could just basically just get a like a just go this is back in 1989 because i remember we was in the terminal of the what's it the boat now i don't remember if it was this side or if it was in dover like i mean if it was in dover or if it was in calais france but madonna's like a prayer was being played on the screen like there was you know it was basically just where people were sitting and waiting around for stuff um so it's definitely 1989 probably we're looking um summertime probably about june may or june probably maybe july i mean a lot happened that that year so maybe it was july maybe it's june maybe it's july i don't know so we stayed in a hotel or was it like a bed and breakfast um so we were in a room he had a bed i had a bed and at this point i was i had a journal i just started doing a journal like it was just a refill pad and i was just writing right how i was feeling you know just a bit like this really just but i was writing it down and i kept well actually i lost that journal but then i started again in 1990 april and started another one because i had that one all the way through to about september 89 and i left it in a room that i was renting and i don't know how i managed to do that but then i went back to the room to see if they had it and they didn't have it and it was a shame because it had like a whole summer's worth of my thoughts and i mean really it was not really not any different from this in a way i suppose perhaps a bit more personal you know about how i'm feeling as opposed to just talking about stuff from the past but then in 1989 i didn't have a huge amount to talk about as far as i was 18 or there's you know it's 18 years to talk about but it's there's more to talk about at this age than there was back then as far as writing that stuff down i mean i don't know if i'd even been able to have done a let me boy to sleep when i was 18 i mean i would have had to have sent it out by tape individually to people because there was no internet i mean there was no way i don't know how i would have got any kind of customers or listeners or anything like that unless i had a radio show anyway so we're sitting i'm sitting in the bed he's sitting in his bed we're just chatting and i think we're going to go down outside to eat and i'm in the left-hand bed so actually if you if you was to look at the beds that were against the wall nothing to the sides of either of them that makes sense so they both had the the headboard against the wall and they were side by side but like with a gap enough of a gap to get to sleep knowing there's someone else in the room and i was if you were facing it i was on the right one the right bed he was on the left bed now he said something earlier in the day and he'd used the word fathom just in a sentence i can't i can't fathom why and coal is black or whatever i don't know it was something just something because he was a coal miner at the time and during that conversation in the room separate conversation i said and he said something and i said oh yeah i can't fathom that and he was so impressed with my intellectuality because i'd used the word and he'd obviously forgotten he'd used it and it wasn't a word that i would normally say but he didn't know that because he didn't really know me and he thought i was intelligent because i'd used the word fathom and he told me so he said that's very intelligent of you whatever your name is and i thought to myself ah that's interesting so if i use words that other people use back at them they'll think that i'm maybe interesting or clever i never did it again couldn't be bothered but yeah i just yeah i mean it is it is kind of a technique in a way with like nlp and selling and things like that you know using the persons that you're trying to sell to using their maybe language patterns or yeah maybe the speed that they're talking some of the words to maybe if they use a lot of the same words maybe sort of not parrot fashion but kind of you know maybe change it a little bit but give it back give them kind of what they're giving and they'll like you there's a kind of a report builder a report builder sorry but at the time i didn't really care i just thought it was interesting mildly that's the whole story yeah so what i thought i would do is for trivia tuesday well before i start i'm gonna do foods that used to be medicine foods that used to be medicine wow it's hard to believe isn't it foods i don't know why i'm repeating it there's no reason for it 31 i'm losing track of what's going on here i think i've got the numbers wrong on some of the podcasts no please say i haven't it doesn't sit well oh my goodness i have how did i manage to do that wow that's really bad so whisper wednesday was 1630 was 1630 the next one was yeah the next one was q and a friday 1631 and then yesterday's was 1631 1631 i have to change all of them to 1632 otherwise it's all going to be very very muddled let me check my website because that's going to bug me that is what if it's going to show up on my website as being the wrong numbers it's not oh not on the website it's not oh because i yeah that's why how annoying lack of concentration i do believe that is oh dear it's just there's so much to do it's i don't i realize it might sound like i'm just exaggerated but when it comes to all the editing all this the processing and all that stuff it's very very time consuming and sometimes i perhaps don't concentrate the way i should do or i just lose or maybe i'm interrupted you know maybe some i'm not a spaceship comes down but something happens and i get interrupted and then i go back and i forget to change the number if i do it now while i'm thinking so maybe that'll um that'll sort that out but it's a little bit annoying because i don't want it to be wrong especially when it comes to let me boy to sleeps because i'm trying to keep track of the numbers and i have been since i started eight years ago you know i started with number one and the second one i did was number two and then the third one i did was number three and then the fourth one i did was how long do you think i could get away with just saying that before everybody stops listening or maybe people will just fall asleep out of absolute boredom it's like yeah dear jason i don't know what happened but when you started talking about the numbers i just just fell asleep i'm ever so disappointed because i was so looking forward to hearing about the medicine things or whatever it is you were going to talk about so well it's nearly done i'm nearly there see very professional yet not if that makes any sense so yesterday i did um monday's board and objects which was tourist tips which is 1632 but i've also made two recordings today so i'm quite pleased with that i've done a breaking free from control and manipulation sleep i've got to change that as well oh sleep after emotional abuse so i need to change some of that stuff and i did the third one from healing from the inside called healing heartbreak sounds like a song doesn't it oh so i've got a little bit of tinkering to do a little bit of editing to do a bit of checking the text to do i'll tell you what's something that really does hold me back not hold me back but takes the time is not just uploading and recordings to my podcasts on the speaker but also soundcloud because then i have to download them because i can't do it on my lap my ipad it won't let me do it for some reason so i have to download them on my laptop and then upload them to soundcloud and because at the moment i'm doing some would argue way too many recordings it's kind of hard to keep up with um all the downloading and uploading this stuff i try but it does literally take hours and especially with the internet being quite slow here well that's all done so with the breaking free from control and manipulation i have just in case you're wondering because it's a new podcast and i'm sure you're just as excited as i am i've now had 98 total downloads and i've got 162 listenable episodes but it's not it's the six divided by six episodes divided by is 162 will give you the amount of recordings i've done or 162 divided by six yeah that'd be it wouldn't it and so that's going all right i've not shared the new podcast yet the healing from the inside because i wanted to get a few recordings on there which i have now i've got three so finding peace after loss quietening the mind and healing heartbreak so really with the distribution i need to start sharing them so i will i'll submit it to spotify as we're talking heart iheart radio amazon submit castbox submit the amazon music audible deezer submit podcast addict is that podcast addict submit and pod chaser submit and it takes with submitting um podcasts new podcasts it takes sometimes it takes months really for the podcasts to grow to sort of gain any kind of listeners and i have to go to apple podcasts and add it to there as well but i'll do that separate because there's a bit of a process for that one but yeah it'll be good just because i've got no no downloads from that podcast yet at all because it's what no one knows about it but i have done on the other podcast i've uploaded it to so the hypnosis of sleeping deeply i've got i don't know how many downloads i've got let's have a look what is it called um i don't know come on i can't forget what the name of the podcast is called free uh did did oh healing from the inside so here i've got 61 on one of them um 49 and another 48 on another 48 on another one 47 and another one 44 and another one so i've got probably a few hundred downloads from that the actual episodes they're just not from the actual podcast itself and i'm just looking yeah i think that's about it there's a few okay 38 34 33 31 31 30 29 12 anyone had anyone keep track of these 9 9 9 9 9 uh yeah so there's a few so probably i don't know probably adds up to a few hundred and so that's all right isn't it it's just it's one of those i mean you might ask well why do you keep doing new stuff well i may not record new things anyway but to start two nude podcasts now that sounded like i said two nude podcasts didn't it two new two topless no two new podcasts and the breaking free from control and manipulation is although it's new because i only created it a month ago so the very first episode was would have been in may may the 7th which is well just 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 so yeah it's just over five weeks ago or a month and eight days nine days something like that so yeah i'm quite i think it's gone quite well well again i'm not getting a huge amount of listeners on the actual podcast itself because as i said the 98 downloads i mean yesterday i did get 19 downloads to day six so far but it's still early days it's only half four in the afternoon and a lot of my traffic comes in the evening sort of especially like in the uk in there but going back to the other podcast i'm just having a look if anyone wants to just uh keep a track of this so let's have a look so the last seven days i've got just these amount of ones i've got so breaking free so that's a breaking free from control and manipulation 96 75 70 69 67 60 55 54 54 53 49 49 49 49 so adding all these up this is just the last seven days and 48 48 47 47 and 45 so that's a few that's quite a few hundred didn't it and 44 44 43 43 another 43 blimey 39 38 see yeah i can't even that we might be looking at nearly a thousand just for just for that i don't know it's gonna be weird i mean yesterday if we just look for one day one day one day in my life so yesterday for the uh breaking free one 40 38 35 32 31 23 uh 23 okay nine eight seven six another six another six four so it's a few isn't it that's just yesterday 40 80 90 100 so probably about 150 maybe 200 yesterday from that the last 30 days why are you talking about the stats you're supposed to be doing tuesday trivia tuesday thing i know i can't help it it's one of those weird things i just can't seem to stop myself i did do a recording the other day when i was actually adding up how many times people had listened to the breaking free podcast on all the other different podcasts and i realized while i was doing it that it was really really really time consuming like seriously time consuming and it did work out that i got thousands the downloads i've had thousands of listens of that podcast just not on the actual podcast itself but it's just too long to count them all i mean seriously i was like it's very difficult and that was only for the first i think i did six six recordings out of about at the time about 20 or 19 i've now got about 26 recordings done so it's just it's it's just non-stop and i'm just moaning non-stop and i don't know why oh look at this it's a 50 foods and drinks that were once used as a medicine apparently according to this ketchup was sold in the 1830s as a cure for indigestion now before i develop any kind of interest in this or research doesn't ketchup have vinegar in it doesn't have it's quite acidic isn't it ketchup how can acid anything acidic be good for indigestion that's my question i don't expect an answer but i'm going to um question that so apparently it's a genuine and rather amusing piece of history in the 1830s an american physician named john cook bennett and as i said in the past don't use any of this information in a heated argument because it might all be lies i'm using chat gbt no offense chat gbt but it's not always correct and i also don't care if it's not true and i'm not gonna fact check it so it probably is true or has truth in it but i'm not you know this is just a recording i'm not gonna um devote uh years of my life of really getting into the nitty-gritty of whether or not what i've read out is exactly correct so yeah in the 1830s an american physician named john cook bennett promoted tomato ketchup as a remedy but did he did he make it or is it already there did he just like say oh i've got an idea run out of ideas chuck us over that that bottle of heinz um tomato ketchup i'll tell you what brown ketchup what do they call it is it brown um heinz brown ketchup whatever or sauce now that is acidic i have acid reflux and i can have tomato ketchup i don't have a lot but i wouldn't go near the brown my tongue doesn't go anywhere near the brown because i literally it's it's almost like you can well i can i can taste the vinegar but it doesn't i mean i'm just thinking there might not be any vinegar in it but i'm pretty sure there is vinegar in it and that's no good for for indigestion or heartburn but what do i know i mean maybe john cook bennett had a i wonder if he was a cook maybe he had a good a good idea why didn't he just call himself john bennett why do people need to put their middle name in do you know anyone that's got a double-barreled name do you ever question it i used to know one called someone called sarah sarah sue or something never called a sarah sue oy that's all i did oy now i call a sarah i wouldn't call a sarah sue go away i'm not giving you i'm not calling you by two names what you special are you hey i don't mean special like i thought about like you're not royalty are you never got that and double-barreled surnames oh but i i i i i i i want to keep my mummy's and my daddy's surname i'm gonna keep my surname and and have this stop it it doesn't i don't care what people do i just i'm just not into the double-barreled i've never really got it i mean i was with i had a girlfriend once believe it or not and this was 2006 and we talked about having a kid when she talked about having a kid i was just waiting for her to stop talking so that i could uh say what i wanted to say and she said talked about oh we should have a kid and i'm like no not have a kid get married did i say have a kid we did talk about having a kid but you know it didn't happen but we talked about getting married and we was thinking about getting married and she was thinking about getting married i was trying not to think about getting married and she she or might be the other way around and she said oh but we're gonna have my name and your name i said well you're gonna keep your name ain't you not be called jason and she laughed thinking i was joking and she said no i'm talking about a surname i'm gonna be whatever her surname was newland actually i think she was disrespectful when she said newland because she did not respect me at all new land the amount of people give me a funny look when i say that out loud and as i got older there seems to be a gap now between the new and the land and i'm sure people wonder is there a is there a little like apostrophe or is there a what is it is it is it double-barreled no i don't even think i've got a double-barreled name i couldn't allow that do you know that muhammad ali's grandson right who's famous in america for being muhammad ali's grandson and he's a boxer but he's famous for being his grandson anyway and i think apart from his i don't know if he's the son of his daughter talula or whatever that used to became a boxer i'm not 100 sure but he's got a double-barreled surname so he's named after i guess his dad and ali as his slights grand granddad and his mom originally and i thought no just keep the ali get rid of the others other names because it's set him up for life isn't it just being the grandson of muhammad ali basically put him on the world stage in america anyway um he's not i think he's particularly known in this country but i've seen him in america and they introduce him and they make a big old fuss over him you know everyone's hugging him and kissing him as he's walking to the ring um it's you know even the boxer's opponent um was fighting him and the opponent got him in the corner and was punching him and then the opponent stopped and whispered in his ear is it okay if i punch you or do you want me to stop he said why he said because you're muhammad ali's grandson and we all love you um if you want you could knock me out i can just like stand here and you know and i'll fall down and he said okay um so yeah i don't know if he's he just seems to be because he's muhammad ali's grandson it would be a bit like if jimmy hendrix grandson i don't know if jimmy hendrix spread his seed or not but a weird way to say isn't that's very biblical i don't know jimmy hendrix had any kids but if his grandson or daughter but his grandson became a guitarist he's gonna get attention it's just there's nowhere around it is there uh in the same way as when nigel ben's son and chris eubank's son became boxers they didn't have to go through the rough time that most boxers have to go through because they were already had famous names the eubank name and the ben name are massive two of the biggest names in boxing in this country their dads still legends they're legends in this country as far as boxers and well they were boxers they're both legends and like um of course they ended up fighting each other twice but they didn't have to go through the doing all the small hauls and stuff and having to work while they you know while they were training because of their famous parents and what is it nepotism that's called i call it fortunate and say good luck now some people don't like nepotism but you know what nepotism is i like the word i don't know why i mean i don't know if nepotism is just really about family but i've got people jobs loads of times and other people have helped me get a job it's just natural you help each other you help someone you care about is that nepotism yeah probably but it's also human nature you know if you've got if you're interviewing people for a position and say as a supervisor and you've got six people interviewing and you're the one that has to make the decision and you've got maybe two that you don't get on with maybe you've got three or two that you you do get on with maybe you've got another one that you get on with even better and then perhaps you've got one that you're really really quite close to who are you going to give the job to now logically or professionally or morally it should be the person that's most suitable for the job obviously but that's not going to happen is it with a lot of people they're going to choose their friend they're going to choose the person or just it might not even be like a close friend it might just be someone they enjoy spending time with someone that's easy to be around someone that works really hard and is going to take the the pressure off of them and that they like as opposed to someone that perhaps they just don't get on with that might be much better for the job i mean i got i mean my getting people's jobs wasn't really a big thing because i got people jobs in a cleaning place cleaning the supermarket i got two people jobs there this is before 1991 and then i got my cousin a job when i started working at where was it i started working in insurance and i was working in an insurance company and my cousin was living near a place that had an office of insurance that i was in so i spoke to my boss and he sorted it out for him to have an interview and to get the job to do what i was doing and he did so it was really all in-house easy because they were looking for people anyway and he just said yeah if he's anything like jason run no he didn't say because i was doing pretty well at that time in the job but that's nepotism isn't it someone in the garden oh our back door the back door was very dirty no the back it is the back door to the building that is and it's fallen apart literally fallen apart that that just i don't know how or why i don't know how it happened so at the time tomatoes themselves were becoming more accepted as food because they're fruit no tomatoes they're not vegetables vegetables and bennett believed they possessed significant medicinal properties he even had concentrated tomato pills which he produced and sold as medicine and other manufacturers soon copied the idea although many exaggerated the claims and some products turned out to be little more than quack remedies where does that come from quack because i think of a duck don't you if you have a quack a duck maybe an elephant but you know it's very a few it's like what's that got to do with someone being um like a snake oil salesman i was called a snake oil salesman once and i really didn't like it i remember thinking at the time i'm getting a different job he even had concentrated okay so if you'd visited a doctor 200 years ago with an upset stomach you might have been advised to take a dose of ketchup instead of antacids hmm okay fair enough so the next thing coca-cola was originally marketed as a medicinal tonic do you remember that movie with michael j fox where he is a doctor or junior doctor and he he crashes his car or something and he's forced i don't know if he's forced to work or he starts working in a little town in the midwest under the tutelage of a very elderly doctor that's been there for thousands of years and i don't know but there's this i can't remember what the name of the movie was but there's a there's a yeah there is a thing in there's a like a scene in the movie where little kid's got a bad tummy and the doctor gives him a can of coke and michael j fox says no no you can't do that we can't go back to the future no he didn't say that he said um doc hey doc wait no he said doc yeah doctor he said um you can't do that it's that's coca-cola so yeah he said um he said you can't hey doc you can't do that no it's coke i mean an advert i guess wasn't that for coca-cola but and the doc said don't worry i can do this i've been doing this a long time don't you know and he he gave the the tin of coke to the kid and kid held it up so that everyone in the cinema could see it and he drunk it and then he did a big big burp and he felt better and the doc said to uh michael j fox see i told i told you i said i told you that it was gonna be okay yeah that's just a memory i had from that movie it just reminded me um did you know here's a bit of information i found out ages ago coca-cola was created in a pharmacy um created by a pharmacist from atlanta i'm just looking up now john stiff pemberton but i remember it because it was made in a like a kettle not a normal kettle like you bore water in but something so 1886 it was developed as a medicinal tonic and sold at pharmacies it was advertised as helping with a variety of complaints including headache fatigue nervous disorders and even indigestion the drink was first served at a soda fountain and early advertisements promoted it as a valuable brain tonic and refreshing beverage in its earliest form coca-cola even contained small amounts of you know what i'm going to say they're derived from coca leaves although this ingredient was later removed they took out the best bit they should have named it they should have renamed it just cola because if it hasn't got coca in i mean coca could also mean chocolate couldn't it i used to love coca-cola i don't drink it at all now i used to love it sometimes i drink it very rarely maybe a couple of times a year a year seven up once contained it what oh no way seven up once contained lithium and was promoted as a mood booster wow i have to get more information about that that's very wow apparently this one's true also charles leiper grigg why did they put in this their middle names i don't know i can see i'm gonna get a few messages dear jason i generally like your recordings they're mildly okay to listen to and there's nothing else in the world to do but that rant and i don't know what to what do you call it about double-barreled surnames was very disrespectful i'm very very upset with you i'm not angry i'm disappointed yeah okay charles leiper grigg introduced seven up in 1929 under the rather rather catchy name they're being sarcastic here bibb label lithiated lemon lime soda they're doing their own jokes now apparently that was the name of it but they're saying i wanted the rather catchy name stop chat gpt wow so seven up contained lithium citrate now if you don't know lithium is used in well it still is but it used to be very much used in bipolar or manic depressant that used to be called so yeah it would uh was it compound is now used in medicines to help treat bipolar i'm not on lithium but if you're on lithium you have to keep because it's a salt it's just a salt from the sea or something they're all salts from the sea i don't know but it's just kind of salt and um it was promoted at helping people feel better and more cheerful lithium remained an ingredient in seven up until 1948 when it was removed fortunately the amount was relatively small small and seven up eventually became just a lemon live lime soft drink so basically what they're saying is soft drinks in the past were way better than they are now it's just like coca-cola would have been i mean i'm not you know i'm not advocating anything but i might have had a bit more of a harder time giving up the coca-cola than i did and it was hard enough anyway because sugar is obviously very addictive and the caffeine a mixture of sugar and caffeine and they still say there's a secret ingredient makes you wonder doesn't it so um what's the next one guinness was remaining guinness guinness the drink was recommended to pregnant women and blood donors i know guinness has got iron you know some people say they pronounce iron iron incorrectly did you know that like i did the ironing no it's iron but it's got ah it's got an r in it it's got an r in it yeah but it's a silent r okay silent r iron iron i like a bit of iron widely reckoned this is weird i suppose really the weirdest thing about it is um alcohol being recommended to pregnant women or pregnant anyone who's pregnant because nowadays it's very much frowned upon um i think my mum she didn't listen to the things about not drinking or everything she she went the other way i think i was she gave birth to me in a pub it's true it's not true i don't know why i said it people recover from illness and blood donors now is that before or afterwards the belief was that the stout contained iron and other nutrients that could help build up the blood and aid recovery but i thought guinness did contain iron huh wow in the mid 20th century wasn't unusual for hospitals in the uk and ireland to offer guinness to patients and blood donors was sometimes given a bottle afterwards the famous slogan guinness is good for you reflected these opinions so they used to advertise it saying it was good for you wow modern medical advice of course is very different health authorities do not recommend alcohol during pregnancy and blood donors are usually offered tea coffee biscuits or juice instead and i don't even drink guinness but i think i'd rather have a pint of alcohol than a biscuit even if i don't even drink but after giving a pint of blood you want it you got to replace it with a pint of something in it chicken soup has been used for centuries to treat colds oh yeah because it's it's that's kind of self-explanatory isn't it really because you know it's an easier thing to eat it's not hard to swallow is it because it's basically just liquid with a bit of food in it and it's warm and it's cozy i mean i probably would say i prefer tomato soup i think sort of in the winter or in you know that kind of period it's nice to have a bit of soup but not as a main meal it's not a meal i don't want to start going on about that again but it's not a meal i actually had a date with someone and they gave me a bowl of soup and two bits of bread and i'm thinking well i wonder what's for dinner what's you know what all the mains are gonna be and i'm waiting and i'm waiting at the table and nothing else comes and this this was like over 10 years ago 15 years ago since yeah 15 years ago blimey and you know what i'm still waiting i'm still there at the table and she still hasn't brought me any food garlic was used by the ancient egypts to treat wounds oh no a garlic was described for infections and parasites i think the thing with garlic is nothing wants to come near it because it's so disgustingly stinky that even i mean humans don't want to go near it do they so infections and parasites it just shows you that infections and parasites clearly have a sense of smell because garlic is disgusting no offense to anyone likes garlic but it's disgusting and it's really grim it's like no i like garlic garlic is nice i mean some people say it's not nice i'm all for it i'm on the fence and i think it's horrible i don't i don't dislike it and it's just it's the smell it's i remember there was a so i had to kind of add my own stuff to this but i fell in love with this female and she used to go to the meditation classes this was around 2009 i fell in love with her because i was washing up some cups and she held my arm and said oh jason like that and i just i don't know i think maybe it's the human contact that i hadn't had for a while for some reason i just i my my emotions got erect i don't know whatever you want to call it but my my it yeah i fell in love with her i did it's very difficult but i fell in love with her it wasn't difficult falling in love with her but i did fall in love with her and i started listening to mushy music and stuff you know what's the i'm trying to think what some of the songs i used to listen to i would run by me anymore and i would run five miles around the common arts not the common arts what's that that scottish band i would walk 500 miles commitments was it the commitments or the communards i would walk 500 miles and i would walk 500 more so it's two twins both ginger i'm not just mentioning it just so you know who i'm talking about and obviously in competition bragging i'd work for i'd walk 500 miles well i'd walk 500 more it's got to be annoying i've never been a twin but anyway oh this this female that i liked well i fell in love with her i loved her i really really honestly i'm not even joking i loved her and she knew it because i told someone and they went told her gossip gossip gossip and then she started acting a bit weird around me and she clearly was trying to find a way to probably like change the way i was feeling and she found a way so what she did so i all i know is the result but it worked so she clearly ate something with garlic in so what she did she went to a bag got a bottle of cocoa drunk out the bottle put the lid back on and then walked back to me and she did the biggest burp and i went right in my face and it was basically a garlic a garlicky coca-cola burp and instantly didn't like her anymore i didn't dislike her but i didn't it broke that spell it turned me back into a frog whatever you want to call it you know that the spell was broke see i mean i suppose i've got a lot to thank because she wasn't into me anyway so i suppose it saved me more more problems but emotionally but yeah but she literally almost like she'd planned it she probably didn't but she did do the massivest burp right in it honestly it blew my hair back that's when i used to have hair and if you could imagine her cheeks were like just wobbling while she was burping it was a little bit like that like i have a cartoon but it was all smelly proper stinky it was but i mean it's nothing wrong i mean i can't i don't think it's being offensive to say that a vegetable doesn't smell very nice you know it's i don't think that's particularly personal is it really i just the weird thing about it is i like onions but i don't like them at all here's the weird thing i don't like onions necessarily if they're kind of all like stringy but you chop you finely chop an onion finely chop it i'll have that on a burger even if it's not even fried it's almost beautiful like a nice beautiful addition but if you just add it all stringy it's still sort of still all right but it's like it's you know it's not the same it's there's no if you get a burger and you've just got an onion and bits and chunks of an onion that's just there's no etiquette in that is there there's no care there's no love i mean if i'm going to eat something i want it to have had love showed to it i went off off track there a little bit didn't i Hippocrates, Hippocrates often called the father of medicine Hippocrates we recommended garlic for a number of conditions i lived i know it's supposed to be good for you i lived in a house in a room i had two alcoholic neighbors i got really well with them i didn't drink if i'd been drinking i wouldn't have gotten well with them all because i wasn't drinking it was much easier and they had garlic in the fridge and every single thing in the fridge stunk and tasted of garlic including the milk including everything it was i think it was the only thing that they could taste because they were just drunk all the time and i think it was the only thing they really could kind of enjoy and perhaps they felt they needed it but it was smelly the whole fridge was smelly but apparently it's quite good for you i mean i have had garlic tablets in the past just to you know for their health benefits but i didn't notice when and they're supposed to be odorless but when i burped i stunk the room out i could smell it because you know you can smell your own burps can't you like it's like it's supposed to be odorless this clearly isn't odorless otherwise i wouldn't be able to smell it plus i did try i did stick one up my nose as well chocolate was once used to relieve stomach complaints and it still is in this household i mean chocolate can help to you know if there's if there's something you need to do and you normally do it and you kind of would like to do it but maybe there's something from stopping it from happening chocolate can sometimes help that little journey that little that little um paddle boat or that little canoe cross the river if you know what i mean it just adds a little bit of energy a little bit of i don't know a little bit of fuel for the engine to get across to the other side i hope that's subtle enough i'm talking about pooing in case you didn't know um lemons were used to prevent scurvy i mean scurvy was caused by isn't scurvy something you get you don't eat any vegetables or fruit is that correct because i think my brother's got scurvy so yes because lack of vitamin c symptoms include tiredness tiredness wow so yeah if you're not eating fruit and stuff maybe not scurvy it's not scurvy that my brother's got wow um crabs that's it so must oh cabbage leaves were applied to sore joints mustard was used in warming poultices now i've never put mustard on my skin just because it's never really come up if you know what i mean just never really i've never like sat around thinking you know what there's something i've never tried so for hundreds of years mustard be used in mustard poultices or mustard plasters a paste made from mustard powder and water was spread onto cloth and applied to the chest back or joints people believed that the heat and irritation it produced could help with chest infections coughs congestion muscle aches and everything the idea was to increase blood flow and create a warming sensation um it doesn't say whether or not it worked because if you think about it what's that stuff deep what's the stuff you put on you on your boobs um like to clear your chest and stuff um on your back if you've got someone to do it i mean i can't reach my back ever since i stopped doing yoga what's that thing um not deep heat not vaseline but it's similar to vaseline it's pretty much the same type of jar like a plastic jar of a as vaseline not deep heat what is it called um i can't remember what it's called it's not vaseline though the only reason i know it's not vaseline is because when i was a kid about 13 14 came home from school and there was no one else in the house and in the bathroom there was two tubs there was vaseline and the other one which used for putting on your chest and you know to help sort of sinuses and stuff like that i went to pick up the vaseline but i picked up the wrong one because i was in a hurry to get upstairs and um yeah i'm not going into details but that was a very difficult situation especially as everybody suddenly came home at the same time and i'm upstairs yeah it yeah it was what was it called i can't remember but anyway i've it's good because i had some when i had a i think a cold or whatever i think when i end up put it on my chest and really did seem to help not vaseline i've got some vaseline but maybe well yeah i don't use it i don't know i don't use it i don't know why i bought it i think i bought it for the hinges and the doors to try and make the hinges to stop squeaking but i've now got some p62 or whatever it's called some squeaky oil stuff onions were believed to cure headaches lemons were used okay vinegar is thought to protect against plague okay well i think we can all realize that that wasn't true but hey you're gonna you're gonna cling it whatever you can on you in a situation like that i imagine uh cranberries were used to help bladder problems i thought cranberry juice was for i thought cranberry juice was for constipation because i bought loads of bottles of cranberry juice and it didn't help cabbage leaves were applied to sore joints apples were recommended for diet for digestive health help health figs were used to saw sue sore throats prunes oh prune juice that's what it is i got prune juice for constipation i had a big box of prune juice bottles delivered and it didn't seem to do the job i ended up going to the pharmacy and they said well we've got two types of tablets you can have and i said okay they said well there's one this one it'll just take a while and you know or if you take this one it'll pretty much work straight away and i said i don't know what to do and she said well can you hurry up because i've got other customers to speak to and you know i said well just clearly you can say that you can see that i need help she said yeah probably you do but um just you know you need we need to just move on because i have to deal with the other customers i said look you're embarrassing me and she said i'm embarrassing you you're the one who started shouting out about how you were constipated can you flap your ears please finn thanks he's getting a bit a little bit restless because he wants to go out barley water was used to treat fevers oatmeal was recommended for skin conditions oatmeal mind you oatmeal you could do oatmeal is that the same as ready brick peppermint was used to calm upset stomachs that still is isn't it ginger was prescribed for nausea pineapple is used to aid digestion isn't pineapple the opposite isn't it very acidic carrots we were thought to improve eyesight below me i'd be eating nothing but carrots if that was true i used to have i used to go through a thing when i used to juice now in the 90s juicing did not mean what it means now had nothing to do with steroids it was basically it was a craze that was going on in the late 90s and you just get a juicer and you put this stuff down a little nozzle whatever it was and it just turned into it would just shred it and turn it into juice like carrots apple whatever and it's amazing how nice carrots juice tastes it don't the carrots themselves i'm not a big fan of carrots i've never eaten a carrot and thought oh i wish i could just eat these all day long i wish no other food existed but carrots never never had that thought or that feeling i've never been at a dinner where carrots were kind of you help yourself to different things and i've never gone back for seconds from the carrot bowl never i upset my dad once he said we'll all kind of come to the end of our dinner and he said does anyone anyone else want to want that last Yorkshire pudding and i said oh yes please and i went and grabbed it and started eating it this was about 15 years ago he still hasn't forgiven me honestly i i think if he if his will if his will is read before mine i'm pretty sure it's gonna say nothing to Jason and you know why and just a little picture of a Yorkshire pudding or maybe he would just leave me a Yorkshire pudding you know in a little bag and spinach was promoted as a strength building food what came first that cliche or Popeye it has got iron in isn't it or iron so spinach has i thought it's quite good for you i think liver was prescribed for amnia anemia and it's because it's got liver in it and a lot iron or whatever i think it still is i do believe cod liver oil was given to children for health and growth still is a health thing isn't it i thought there was going to be like really weird things but a lot of this it still is classed as being useful like ginger is supposed to be good for nausea it still is isn't it um cod liver oil we still buy cod liver oil tablets beef tea was once served to invalids beef tea beef tea why does that sound is that like bovril is that what bovril is beef tea i think of beef gravy i know who the heck would want to eat beef gravy like out of a cup but beef tea wouldn't that be like putting boiling oh no no thanks bone broth was used as a restorative tonic yeah beer was safer to drink when water in some places was considered was not considered healthy so yeah i know that's for a fact i've seen that before so people used to drink beer rather than water because beer was safer to drink i think i don't know but i guess that's why tea as well um tea and coffee because it's boiled water isn't it and boiling gets rid of stuff and with alcohol that's also i mean something like vodka this is actually used isn't it to clean wounds and stuff i'm not not in hospitals but like in the wild and in movies wine was used as an antiseptic brandy was prescribed okay fair enough hot milk was used to help people sleep rice water was used to treat not gonna say that word yogurt was promoted for longevity yogurt still is quite popular isn't it i think it's known what's those activia the ones are supposed to be have the special gut things i might get some myself actually tea was believed to cure almost almost anything when first introduced to europe it's amazing to think that there was a time in this country where tea did not exist me honestly unless you've lived here vinnie is chasing a fly he's hunting a fly actually don't want to get your red bull red bull vinnie so you can have some wings oh oh i'm not affected by adverts radishes were thought to cleanse the blood do you know once right i was in a supermarket this is totally true in a supermarket at the counter just buying my stuff and um and i missed something like it was left in the other basket you know and um the cashier said oh you've you left that cucumber and i was embarrassed but then i remembered not everyone knows what you're going to do with the food do they and when you get home so i said oh okay and the woman there was a woman there waiting behind me she said oh should have gone to spec savers and it was just like a really awkward silence and i thought this is just embarrassing now so i told her what i was going to do with a cucumber when i got home um it was less embarrassing it was no i wasn't i was going to eat it obviously cucumber sandwich did i ever tell you about the cucumber story when i was sharing a house probably didn't i probably wouldn't tell it on this no don't worry about it anyway all i'm going to say is um all i'm going to say is sometimes because it was my cucumber right sometimes it's not always a good idea to eat other people's food that's what i'm saying um bananas were recommend what's it beetroot was recommended for circulation do you know that's because it was red like blood because it is kind of that kind of color in it celery was believed to calm nerves pumpkin seeds were used against parasites another thing that garlic was used to for people that were celibate and they would eat garlic because there was no chance in the world that they were going to ever break that celibacy even if they wanted to seaweed was prescribed for thyroid problems horseradish was used to clear congestion watermelon was recommended for kidney health and ice cream was sometimes given to patients recovering from surgery good anyone has gone through surgery deserves any type of ice cream they want unless of course you know they're not allowed to eat ice cream then that's a different thing my brother right my oldest brother he had his tonsils out and it was one of those situations i had three brothers and we all used to get the same illnesses i had tonsillitis about 15 times growing up and every time he went to the doctor next time you'll next time you come back here i'm gonna get your tonsils taken out i was i was scared i mean what i remember one time i had an ingrown toenail i was scared to go and see him and then my mom explained it was really to do with tonsils the toenail was fine he wasn't he wouldn't take my tonsils out because of my toe and i okay well which adults would be a bit more clearer in their communication and my oldest brother he had his tonsils out i had my adenoids out and i had my appendix out my other brother didn't have nothing my middle brother he was like super healthy not not having your tonsils out is unhealthy but um or appendix even and the adenoids because i was partially deaf in one ear so my oldest brother had his tonsils out and he wasn't allowed to eat anything but ice cream for about a week it might be longer and he was so cocky yeah i say he was cocky couldn't hear understand what he's saying because he could hardly talk but he was before the operation he was told that he'd only be able to eat ice cream and he was looking forward to the operation honestly he's like good so he was all like we were all eating our liver and all the horrible stuff that we were forced to eat and he'd be there with his ice cream smirking and he was so happy for the first two days the third fourth he was not enjoying the ice cream anymore all he wanted to do is eat food proper food and he couldn't and he's a big lad as well he was like over six foot when he was at school he's like six four when he left school six four six five so he was he needed a bit of food in him and he didn't like i'm not sure if he's ever eaten ice cream since i don't know really why i told you that story i don't think it had the effect i was looking for i thought it would be a good way to end the podcast because when i started this i thought it's going to be a lot of really interesting um foods and drinks that once used as medicine but the look of it a lot of them still is used as kind of additional help with medication so especially things like cod liver oil liver carrots ginger and cranberries honey blimey honey still you know when i went to the dentist they put clover leaves inside my gum it's like a i guess it's an anesthetic isn't it but i don't i've never known a dentist to do that before and i'm not sure if it was the right thing to be doing plus i don't know she'd done i don't know she'd ever done a tooth before i think i might have been a first um i don't know because she said um she asked me she asked me something i found a bit weird she said where's your mouth and i thought ah i don't know if i want this person getting inside my mouth and you know digging around and stuff and you might think what do you mean getting inside honestly she was tiny she was literally inside my mouth drilling away absolutely tiny like about three inches tall it's very weird and i said look can you just not use a loud can you use a loudspeaker or something because i can't hear you she said no this this isn't going anywhere i don't that's what she says it's not going anywhere i said what do you mean she said this story no one believes that i was inside your mouth and i'm not going anywhere and i was three inches tall i said how do you know he said because you've got adults listening you've not you're not doing this to three-year-old children you're not talking to them they might believe you think it's a story and stuff and it's real but you're dealing with adults and they're not going to believe you in fact probably a three-year-old wouldn't believe you because this is just silly i said yeah but you've got storytellers and stuff for little kids that they believe like Narnia she said how old are you so we talked about she said Narnia that's a book that children used to read a hundred years ago which is rude actually i had a compliment i think so i had a delivery from uber eats just a couple of bits of grocery in that and some milk and stuff and he knocked on the door and he just needed to know what my date of birth was so i put my date of birth in because they do checks and stuff and he said never 1970 i said what do you mean he said but you look so young i said and then he'd go like but you're so fit and strong this is true i'm not making this up and i'm like well yeah i suppose i'm quite strong and i was feeling quite good to be honest with you and i shook his hand i said thank you okay i would have kissed him but i don't think he might have liked that but i wanted to sort of thank him because and i said look even if you're lying thank you because it's really made my day someone telling me that i look younger than i am and he said no worries i'm sure i heard him giggling as he was going down the stairs but i ignored that and i'm in my flat in the kitchen unpacking the groceries and i'm thinking oh this feels nice someone's saying that not only that i look physically quite strong but also that you look much younger than being born in 1970 and then i started to think maybe there was a communication issue and he thought that i said i was 70 and he thought i looked young for 70 which i think most people would probably agree i do look young for 70 because i'm not 70 so 55 i don't really see myself looking too much different when i'm 70 but you know i've never been too much in touch with reality so far in my life so now i don't know if he was saying that i looked good for 70 which was actually an insult or if he really did mean that he couldn't believe i was born in 1970 and i'm never going to know you might say phone him up i tried the uber eats phone numbers only work when they're delivering as soon as they're delivered they're gone you can't call them and what is this your Argos pay account number i don't even buy anything from Argos anymore haven't bought anything from Argos in absolutely years i do mean years and i never go i mean like on credit i mean i've got no issue with Argos although Argos in the old days it used to be awful i'm talking like 30 40 years ago used to be like it was a toss-up a real gamble about whether or not what you got home was going to work especially if it was electrical i don't know maybe in the past they didn't respect the packages and just used to chuck them around um did i tell you about when i got a micro a microwave delivered by amazon and the people downstairs have got a camera on the door as have i in fact three of the flats in this building i've got cameras on their doors or four i don't know anyway it was on my neighbor downstairs called me because i have a microwave sitting on the doorstep when i got home because i've been out she said uh have you checked your microwave yet i said how do you know i've got a microwave she said i saw the delivery and it basically didn't it was not covered it just it was just a microwave box with a picture of the microwave and i said no she said can we come up and watch you open it i don't know if it's if i've worded this correctly but i think i said why she said oh come please so i said okay and uh then she showed me before i opened it she showed me the um a video of the person delivering it getting halfway up the stairs and dropping it down the stairs picking it up with two fingers as he was carrying it before and then again dropped halfway down the stairs again and when i picked it up it was rattling and the door was broken everything and i thought wow it's something you see on youtube i should have posted it but i kind of thought no i don't you don't know repercussions and that he might he might see that and it might just be obvious who it was you know i'm not gonna put someone's face on youtube because he might have lost his job or something and i wasn't that bothered because amazon took it back come and collected it two days later and just refunded me the money so it wasn't a big deal really plus i bought that for uncle sausages and the day i bought it someone else bought uncle sausages or someone else got him a microwave i think he paid for it but someone got him one so it was i didn't need it anyway i mean technically i could have just replaced it with my one or replace my one with that but my one works i don't see the point in getting a new one so yeah that was it thanks for listening i'll be a little disappointed with some of the uh food and drinks that were once used as medicine i i thought it was going to be so so ridiculous that now we know it's not any good like um running through stinging nettles was really good for earache or something like that it's like well yeah it's probably quite a good distraction because you want me focusing on your ears would you because your feet would be and then i realized that it wasn't any good for your feet or your ears but no anyway i've had nettle tea have you ever had nettle tea so it's not bad you know it's not nice but it's okay it's like a lot of the uh not fruit teas but the ones that kind of mint and different um weeds and stuff i don't really think any of them taste nice in my experience because i used to they used to drink them a lot but they were they kind of had a weird taste that almost felt like this might be good for me you know like fennel and fentanyl or i don't know what it is like different flavors and seaweed and like kelp and it's like you know what some of this it almost tastes like it like a medicine like that horrible medicine taste however and i don't know why they can't do for adults when i was a kid like little i'm talking like seven up above um we used to get medicine i think it was penicillin and it was in a bottle i think it was either yellow or pink and it tasted yummy and as soon as i became an adult all the medicine tasted horrible why why can't we have nice tasty medicine as an adult why you know i mean i think he's going to be chasing that fly for as long as it lives in the flat i've not been able to open the window because of the some of the noise outside but i need to open it a little bit of air in apparently we've got a heat wave coming um tomorrow so that'll be interesting supposed to be like super hot just like me yeah i don't i look really good for 70 apparently i hope that wasn't what he meant otherwise i shook his hand for nothing and there's nothing that's something that really annoys me it's the only thing in life that really gets me the most is when i shake someone's hand thinking that they give me a compliment and i haven't okay i don't like war either but you know it's generally one of the things i don't like so i'm gonna go now go now baby go now so thank you for listening remember to be kind to yourself because you do deserve to be happy be gentle with yourself you deserve to feel safe lots of love bye
