So yeah, um today's the 22nd the 21st of December so we're nearly there we are nearly nearly at the xmas period so yeah strange times as it's always a bit strange for me i don't i celebrate christmas i don't ignore it you can't ignore it living in this country it's it's hard to ignore because it's a christmas celebrating country you know the course is probably millions of people that don't celebrate christmas but the majority of people do and i'm not really one that does i quite i quite like some christmasy stuff you know some of

the films and the tv shows at christmas and i quite like the build up i love a bit of snow but we haven't had any yet i'm hoping fingers crossed i'd love there to be a blizzard on christmas day just really thick snow all day long i would feel christmassy for the first time in i don't know 35 years because i stopped celebrating christmas really in 1985 was the last time i celebrated christmas as far as i'm concerned and that was when the family was together that's that was with my two brother three brothers and

parents nan and granddad and other nan and you know that was that was christmas since then and bless my dad you know he really goes all out of christmas and he's got a new family and he's you know he's included me in that as well and they're all lovely in that but it's not it's not the same it's not it's not my family it's not my they're not my brothers they're not like they're my brother and sister but they're not you know i mean they're not my the brothers i grew up with and it's not

the same mother that i you know used to have and grandparents none of them are alive anymore it's you know i don't know just not this is depressing isn't it oh thanks jason we thought you might listen to you to cheer us up but it ain't working all right okay it's only four i'm only four minutes in i'll i'll i'll move along i'll move along um to something different but yeah i'm not really into christmas as such as i guess i do kind of celebrate it in my own way kind of um i prefer new

year's eve because it's the end of the year but it's not because it's the end but it's the beginning you know it's like a beginning of a new year and all the new possibilities and i guess if i could if i'd if i thought in a different way managed to you know i could have that feeling at the beginning of every day it's a new day it's a new possibilities new chances new opportunities just i'll be honest it's not how i often feel when i wake up um but i'm i'm not always you know i'm

not really i've never been a morning person really uh i've really well i really i really wake up and start tap dancing you know like oh it's always a new day it's a new dawn and i'm feeling good you know it's more like oh it's a new day i need a piss it's that's kind of where i am it's uh i need to eat i just i have a you know it's a christmas why do jews not celebrate christmas that's what i didn't understand i mean jesus wasn't he the king of the jews were the

jews his followers didn't he die for them for the jews for them people there you know he didn't didn't know about english people didn't know about africa or india or scotland or you know didn't know about any of us they probably didn't even know we existed back then so why don't they celebrate because he's their king oh i mean jesus wasn't a christian you know of course he was a christian no he wasn't of course he was no he wasn't he really wasn't jesus was a jew he wasn't a christian he studied the jewish faith

there was no christianity yes there was he was born because his dad was a christian no his dad oh it depends which which dad you're talking about now you're annoying me how dare you um okay fair enough i mean his dad didn't turn up to any birthdays it turns up when he's about 30 years old says oh by the way you're the son of god really didn't didn't even know his dad imagine that you go 30 years without seeing your real dad you know you got your dad john the baptist or whatever his dad's looked

after him all those years and um mary macklin and whatever and you know you got babysit by the easter bunny and stuff and like and then suddenly out of the blue his dad turns up speaks to him you know like hides in a bush sets the bush on fire and talk why can't you just come out from behind the bush i will not talk no and just like okay so 30 years no birthday presents 30 years without christmas presents and then suddenly you know so oh by the way i'm your dad uh i'm god really

yeah oh and you get to know him for a little while and he says oh by the way you gotta die now uh-huh what do you mean he said yeah aren't you glad i came into your life no not really i was for a while but you know i'm not so much now i was doing all right before the carpentry business is going really well what would you do so yeah it's weird isn't it it's amazing how is this the population i i find it amazing how other cultures have taken on these religions that aren't

even theirs it's not their religion but they've taken it on you know like africa england even like it wasn't our religion this is a middle eastern religion it's got nothing to do with us but the way that we've embraced it well that was forced upon us to be fair but different countries in africa the way like that wasn't there there it's a completely alien to what the how they were before it's amazing but you know i think religion it wasn't always a choice was it you know a few hundred years ago a few thousand years

ago well not a few thousand but let's say five six seven hundred years ago it wasn't your your religion wasn't a choice was it in many countries but then going out to other countries like india and such like the evangelists or whatever they call them you know the ones the crusaders or the that went out to teach to push our religion even though it's never been our religion you know if you're in america or england christianity is not your religion it might be your personal religion for you or islam or whatever but it ain't your

religion it doesn't come from your country it comes to the middle east buddhism comes from india no it's chinese no but the buddha's chinese i've seen the statue and it's big got big belly yeah yeah let's say when was that aimed at that was from like two thousand years ago how many indians or chinese come to think of it do you think walked around or any anyone really walked around with a big fat belly two thousand years ago rich people were the only ones that had big fat bellies you know maybe okay there was probably

the odd ones it's genetics but there weren't a huge amount of fat people around back then because it wasn't there wasn't that much you know people weren't picking themselves full of food other than the rich people the average person wouldn't have much i don't know if it's true or not it sounds good though doesn't it well it doesn't sound good but yeah think about it like how lucky we are how lucky even though things are hard and difficult and you know for various everyone's got it difficult in some ways but imagine being alive 600 years

ago 500 years ago i mean for some members of the population it would be there'd be slavery and i don't know how many years going back i mean it's only what a couple of hundred years isn't it where that was just normal normal normal going but then slavery wasn't slavery was going on everywhere apparently if you go back far enough the i don't think it's pirates used to come to england and steal literally come and steal people and put them in slavery just english ordinary english workers people that maybe worked on farms or whatever and

they come they just basically kidnap them and put them in chains and and then use them as slaves maybe sell them onto the slavery market so it's almost like it didn't matter where you got them from no questions asked so anyone that you could put in change you could basically sell them on as a slave i mean that is absolutely ridiculous isn't it and it was done there was people oh wow you really mean you know you talk about slaves it's not very christmasy king of the jews i'm disgusted by that no but he was

king of the jews he was he was that's what they called him so you know no but they can't be christians because they killed him they chose him they chose him to be killed no they didn't choose him to be killed it's like that's another thing like that's the whole idea is like the jewish crowd will ask or the crowd they were all jews apart from the romans so the crowd were asked who do you want to save they chose to save was it pilot who was a freedom fighter no he was a thief okay

let's have a look then pilot let's have a look pontius pilot yeah so why did pont oh wait a minute i know pilot pontius pilot was the actual person that killed him okay fair uh so i thought it was him to do um person person saved over okay here we go um barabbas barabbas so barabbas okay so i got the wrong name it wasn't um pilot pilot was the naughty man that didn't like jesus barabbas he wasn't a thief so well he might be in a thief but basically he was the leader of a jewish

non-violent resistance to pilot's plan to set up a roman uh sort of you know basically it was against the romans so he was a freedom fighter so a lot of people in the crowd were probably more likely to want to set him free because he was famous and he was a freedom fighter so it wasn't he wasn't just a nobody it wasn't just like oh they chose a dirty old smelly thief over the son of god no it wasn't quite like that and apparently they still say i watch i've seen a few of those films

over the last couple of weeks or two the king of kings and um the greatest story ever told or something but something that someone shouted out which really made sense is that uh there's a scene where barabbas is being told that he's free to go and he says why he said well they chose you over jesus and then he and then the god corrected him so i said well your your your followers shouted the loudest so that would kind of make sense you know like okay whoever shouts the loudest gets heard so what happened to

barabbas after that what happened to barabbas after yeah barabbas is arrested after he's freed by he's arrested after he's freed by pontius palati palate and sent to salt mines he's then sold as a slave and eventually becomes a gladiator he's finally converted to christianity really that i mean that's that's a nice neat ending to the story isn't it wonder if it's true the thing is you don't really know do we why did people see i love the story of jesus i've got a new testament bible and i've always it's hard i think you can love

the story the story of jesus uh okay i don't love the whole story i don't like the fact that he died and very little interest in you know him going and being tempted and for 40 days and 40 nights or whatever or the birth or any of that stuff doesn't interest me what interested me is what he had to say you know the and i quite i quite like parables in a way it's but then every religion i think pretty much has parables i know that buddhism does and i don't know about i don't know

about judaism parables judaism parables a marshall hebrew is a short parable with a moral lesson or religious allegory called a nimshal a nimshal um mashal is used to designate other forms of rhetoric such as fable and apotheca apothecism i've got no idea what that means what has the five fables examples of fables of jesus parable of the sower of the weeds of the mustard seed parable of the parable of the hidden treasure parable of the pearl i think the strange thing about not just the bible but you know all these kind of books religious books

for me is nothing was written down at the time because they didn't have the means to do that so with buddhism wasn't written down it was passed down word you know mouth to mouth mouth to mouth you know passed down spoken word uh well the idea that something could be talked about and kept together for hundreds of years until eventually it was written down i've heard the same story told by four different people and it's different every time it changes and that can be within two days now 200 years i wouldn't trust any story to

last for 200 years to be correct in any way it's going to be exaggerated it's going to be changed possibly to suit the person that's telling the story and so yeah i would say a lot of the stories and the things that we hear in religious texts would be pretty much created by the people that told them hundreds of years later once it was started to get written down then i guess people had less opportunity to exaggerate and to change to suit their own needs although that was used wasn't it the scriptures were changed by

when they buy kings and stuff in order to control the society surely not surely not but yeah it's i think it's very whoever came up with it very clever very um you know so especially maybe i you know i really love uh some of the things that jesus said and stuff but compared to buddhism the bible is tiny like it's such a not the big bible but the new testament so the things that jesus said were very he didn't they didn't really log down that much for me it would have been much better i think

it should have been i want to know every single thing he ever said in a way not like you know i've got piles or you know not that sort of stuff but just all my feet are hurting because they would wouldn't know all that walking but i'd like to have heard more i never felt i read the new testament and i never really felt that i'd had enough maybe that was a part of it maybe that was part of the leaving you wanting more i wanted to hear more of what jesus had to say whether

it was really him that said it or the people had just you know come up with the stuff later on supposedly he really did exist like as a person historically and i don't i'm not really into i don't really know how they figure that stuff out but i don't think it really matters because what he actually said and what's been written down hundreds of years later is not going to be the same thing it might be within this within a ballpark and some of the stories i guess like the mustard seed or some of the

parables are quite simple to pass on and it was done the same way that buddhism was done and i'm sure the same way that the teachings of the quran was passed on word spoken word and these little catchy parables were then passed on and as far as the laws and you know all the rules that came out of it i guess if people were living by those laws and rules then it's not that difficult to remember it i suppose with buddhism there's huge way more rules than with christianity i mean some christians it's uh the

kind of christian i was was going to church once a year some people think and go to church once a week and that that makes them a christian and when it does whatever you decide makes you not saying it doesn't i'm saying whatever you choose to do is up to you but with um with buddhism you gotta kind of live the life and i'm not very good example of that but it's a 24-hour thing you know so many so many rules they call them precepts but rules uh and i know that islam has so many

rules even i mean they're even more um micromanaged than muslim than um buddhists even going to the toilet i mean i don't know any religion other than islam that actually includes rituals and uh stuff like that for just you know toileting so i do wonder about that though like do you really need to be told how to go to the toilet if so like what's wrong with you you know i've i learned how to go to a toilet when i was little kind of worked it wasn't wasn't that complicated but i kind of see i

see the point in a way because if you if you if you take on something completely it means you haven't got to think for yourself so if you've got all these different rituals that you do uh when you eat when you poo when you sleep uh when you maybe make love when you choose a wife or a husband when you uh for every all these different things if you've got all these different rituals that you do then you no longer you i guess it frees your mind up a bit it could go either way you

could just be like a i don't know someone that can't think for themselves or someone that chooses not to think for themselves or maybe it gives you more energy to think for yourselves in other in other ways frees up that energy to then be creative and to you know because there's so many hugely successful muslims especially like in sports uh boxing there's so many muslims that you know at the end say thanks thank you to allah and like okay we get a lot of christians thank you god so what is allah and god are they

watching boxing together i mean never quite understood that you spend 45 minutes punching someone in the face and in the body and in their head trying to hurt them trying to knock them unconscious and then just saying thank you know the lord wanted me to do that no i don't why i mean i'm a big fan of boxing but it is it is horrible really when you think about it someone purposely or two people purposely trying to almost kill each other you know i mean and the people do end up killing each other sometimes back

to christmas again now please jason you know you're just going in the dark places sorry sorry sorry i don't mean to i'm just i'm excited about christmas so it gets me talking about stuff so i do wonder you know like this was it ones the other ones that don't celebrate christmas jehovah's witnesses so let's try and find a jehovah's witness jehovah's witness i used to be friend best friends with uh well he wasn't jehovah's witness because the child is not any religion and no matter what anyone thinks it's the adults the parents that force that

religion upon the child the child isn't their parents or jehovah's witnesses you can't be a jehovah's witness a christian a buddhist or anything until you make up your own mind with a brain that's developed enough to make up that mind so you know you could make up your mind when you're an older child but when you're first born and you're one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven whatever no you're not you're not a christian you're not a jehovah's witness until you decide what it is you want to be what you what

you want to go for you can't be born into religion what about jews they're born no they're not born they're born jews according to themselves but judaism is a separate thing very confusing so um judaism is something that someone would choose and i'll stick into that no i was born i was born a jew a judaism no you weren't i struggle with people that think that they're the chosen ones though that struggles me a little bit struggles me just i just the arrogance of it all right i'm the chosen one i'm going to heaven and

you're not that's what our jehovah's witnesses do i'm going to heaven and you're not unless you become a jehovah's witness and only 43 of us are actually going to go to heaven in a spaceship and or whatever what do um jehovah's witness beliefs okay what do they believe they believe so jehovah's witnesses do believe in one god not the trinity well like most christians they believe that jesus christ died for humankind's humankind's sins however they do not believe that he was physically resurrected after his crucifixion they believe he was only spiritually resurrected splitting hairs i

do believe so what's the difference what's weird what weird things the jehovah's witnesses believe that's a bit judgmental jehovah's witnesses do not observe holidays they believe to have pagan origins which is true such as christmas easter and birthdays they don't celebrate birthdays either and well this country was a pagan country so a christian christmas easter was had nothing to do with religion but it's the same with buddhism when buddhism went over from india to is it thailand uh thai what's that country where the the what's his name dalai lama was kicked out of dalai lama

dalai lama tibet when india um padmasambhava went from india to tibet to take buddhism over there he didn't teach buddhism in the same way as it was taught or even practiced in india he went over there and they were doing all this stuff with uh bells and whistles and lighting stuff and all this stuff yeah which india didn't do had nothing to do with buddhism but what he did he integrated buddhism into what they were already doing so as to make it more accessible and more i guess agreeable i suppose because a lot of that

ritualistic stuff which has got nothing to do with buddhism and people love it buddhists seem to love that ritual stuff and it's got nothing to do with buddhism that's not what buddhism about that's not pure buddhism rituals the buddha didn't do rituals the buddha didn't um as far as i'm aware he didn't have incense he didn't like ring little bells blow little whistles so you know he the buddha the buddha again he did exactly what padmasambhava did because hinduism was where i think the buddha was born into a hindu kind of if i'm correct a

hindu uh life where everyone was hindu and he again incorporated hinduism or incorporated his ideas and beliefs and you know thoughts into hinduism so you know things like the cut the what's it the afterlife or the rebirth and stuff like that he incorporated that because that was already in hinduism as far as i'm concerned it's got nothing to do with buddhism some would say of course it has because it's about being reborn and what about all the different realms the hell realms and all that stuff again tibetan buddhism a lot of that comes from all

these different realms and the realms and being reborn and have to keep being reborn until eventually you're born a bodhisattva which is kind of like uh you become enlightened you come in light you become enlightened during your lifetime as a human and then you're no longer reborn so the whole point of buddhism is to never be is to basically never come back so there's no like hell or heaven with buddhism not not really but there are those realms heaven and hell realms so it's it's so you don't get the pure actual religion you just get

all this mixed stuff and depending if you look into um tibetan buddhism or if you're into i guess chinese buddhism or india buddhism or if you go to western buddhism it's a mishmash it's a pick a mix it really is and the only real way to really you just decide for yourself if you read the buddhist texts the pali canon and you can kind of figure out for yourself if you if you skim off all the flowery stuff and just get down to the basic things that the buddha and all the different followers of his

taught then i think for me that's more of a sense of what buddhism's about the teachings without all of the rituals the trinkets the incense the bells and whistles the rituals all that get get rid of all of that stuff but that's what people love that's what people seem to love and the idea is actually that's what gets you emotionally involved the idea is words can't emotionally involve you deeply spiritually well i i differ with that words are hugely powerful and i think when i read something even where it's jesus or whatever and i i'm

going to read some of the other religious texts because very ignorant towards what's in the um what's that book the quran uh what's in the um judaism torah isn't it torah torah torah torah um hinduism what's the hindu hindu's book hindu's book i do know what it is but i forget what it is the hindu's book the bhagavad the book of hindu scriptures um the little book of hindu deities again i ain't got time for diet deities i just i just yeah not really interested in that stuff hindu's value many sacred writings as opposed to

one holy book the primary sacred text known as the vedas were composed around 1500 bc the collection this collection of verses and hints was written in sanskrit and contains revelations received by ancient saints and sages this the vedas are made up of the big veda etc so again buddhism came from hinduism so there's a lot of uh there's a lot of crossover what's the other one sikh what's the sikh book i think i'm a little bit interested in religion i don't like to think i am but i think i am it's just annoying that all

of them are coming from the middle east about every single major religion seems to have come from you know the middle east like hinduism sikhism buddhism christianity um islam and all the other different ones what about catholicism that's that's that's more uh a kind of kind of gone their own way didn't they with christianity the guru kind of that's more um the old testament isn't it the guru grant sahib is the central holy religious scripture of sikhism regarded by sikhs as the final sovereign and eternal guru so about the the original bible wasn't that about

during uh jesus's day i don't know wow what is this see this this man okay let's say there's a man being to death for sacrilege attempt at sikh golden temple in india and if you're like oh what but then it says here that a man got into the temple and he entered this is a sacred place or whatever and where the sikhism's holy book the guru grant sahib is kept then he grabbed a ceremonial sword placed next to the book those are overpowered by guards and worshippers sikhs regard the guru grant sahib is not just

the holy scripture of their religion but also as the living guru and believe it should be treated with respect as a human might be wow mind you if you want to grab the sword it's almost like is it a terrorist act because that's kind of sounds like that doesn't it hey the 14th dalai lama wow he's got to be the most famous dalai lama isn't he he's 86 years old now but he's proper famous isn't he like all world all i don't know about all all the way around the world because i've not been all

the way around the world asking people do you know who the dalai lama is he's he's won the nobel peace prize the german media prize lantos human rights prize brunel prize for human rights congress congressional gold medal temporal medal cycle proficiency medal freedom medal life achievement award 1999 a bit premature there wasn't it i mean that's what 30 years ago world security annual peace award human rights award and he's still smiling dalai lama net worth surely he's got no money he's not allowed to have money why would they ask that does the dalai lama have

any money dalai lama's net worth is roughly 150 million dollars he's not allowed to carry money not allowed to carry money maybe he's allowed to have money according to this he's ranked as an in ninth in the list of the world's most powerful people ninth why does the dalai lama wear a rolex he doesn't wear a rolex watch does he no even his holiest role is a pact full of spiritual significance his rolex day day is made of yellow gold and a blue face he doesn't wear a gold rolex watch no really is dalai lama

indian obviously he's not indian oh the 14th one was well because buddhism was in india the 14th wow i didn't think he'd be allowed to have any money you know i didn't think that it's that money probably goes to probably an organization that runs everything he does i'm sure it's not his own personal wealth so i don't think he's he's a monk he's not allowed to have money that's one of the rules you don't have anything you don't have you don't you don't collect worldly goods he's definitely not allowed well not allowed i mean you

know if you're a monk you're not supposed to do this stuff but it's like anything it's if you break the rules you apologize yeah you're just like sorry about that and you then you carry on did you know dalai lama's worth wow the 10th dalai lama there's a picture of him surely they didn't have photographs back then 1816 the 10th dalai lama which must mean that none of them lived to be very long to be very old because that one's 88 or 87 no it was only 22 the 10th dalai lama he's only 22 and

he passed away list of dalai lamas wow let's have a look at that the first dalai lama gedun drupa i've seen that picture before 1391 day of birth died 1474 so i can't work out how old he was 1391 1474 so he's in his 80s gedun gedun giatsu second dalai lama 1475 until 1542 so 40 35 85 95 so he's in his 70s i suppose third dalai lama sonam getsu 1543 to ah but this but this is just a date to dalai lamas from but he wasn't dalai lama straight away what's interesting so the second

dalai lama was born in 1475 but it wasn't until he was 75 85 86 87 88 89 90 91 92 so he was 17 before he became the dalai lama the third dalai lama 43 53 63 73 45 678 he was 35 before he was became the dalai lama the fourth dalai lama born 1589 became the dalai lama 12 years old the fifth dalai lama lalalama 16 17 to 42 27 37 27 28 29 30 31 32 26 17 27 37 38 39 40 49 42 so he's 25 when he became a dalai lama the

sixth damanama damanapa dalai lama sanyang getsu 1683 and 97 so 83 93 45 67 so he's 14 when he became the dalai lama the seventh dalai lama is kelsang getsu kelsang getsu there's another kelsang getsu who actually is a tibetan monk who writes books 1708 some say that he should have been the dalai lama 1708 1720 so he was 12 when he became the dalai lama the eighth dalai lama was the jampel getsu 50 50 1758 to 1762 58 68 58 59 60 61 it's four years old come on come on really it's four years

old no 58 no yeah four years old it became the dalai lama wow and he was there until 1804 so 1962 1762 70 80 92 2002 so yeah it was dalai lama for 42 years ninth dalai lama was the langtok getsu well now they're getting specific they're giving the actual date first of december 1805 born so he was five years old when he got made dalai lama and wow man this is oh this is horrible 1805 become a dalai lama in 1810 so he's five years old until 1815 so from five to ten he was

a dalai lama tenth dalai lama sultrim getsu nothing hardly about him no picture but born 29th of march 1816 and then 10 years later he became a dalai lama and he lived to be 1837 26 so he's a dalai lama for 11 years so he's only like 20 odd just over 20 when he blimey 11th dalai lama kedrup getsu first november 1838 to 1842 1842 he became a dalai so that was what four years old again it's until 1856 so 42 to 56 so i said 14 years as a dalai lama crazy in it he's

like 20 12th dalai lama was trinley getsu now there was a gap between all of the different well this doesn't work because this whole idea is the dalai lama is the reincarnation of the previous dalai lama yeah so the first dalai lama bought died in 1474 okay the second dalai lama was 4075 he died 1542 1543 the third one was born he died 1588 1589 the fourth one was born so far so good died 1617 the next one was born 1617 okay fair enough uh 1862 he died by 1682 next one was born 1683 yeah

all right okay 1706 he died 1708 afterwards but it's a long quite a long gestation period isn't it and then 70 died 1757 1758 the next one the eighth was born the eighth dalai lama and then he was he 1804 died to 1805 that's the ninth dalai lama and then passed away 1815 1816 was the next one and they died in 1837 1838 was the next one that was born 1856 1857 1875 to 1876 okay 1933 to 1935 so there's a there was a two-year gestation period again for the last dalai lama that's uh currently

alive wow i think it must be quite good fun being a dalai lama i don't know though there's a heck of a lot to learn huge amounts to learn it's you know the scriptures are huge compared to most religions it's huge amounts of scriptures because there's lots of different versions really of the of buddhism but the old uh pali canon you've got the see if i go through i'll read it to you you've got the baskets they call it buddhist scriptures buddhist scriptures so the three baskets of wisdom vinaya vinaya pitaka this is the discipline

basket a rule book for monks and nuns so let's have a look um buddhist scriptures sacred book of buddhism because the sacred book of buddhism is called the tripitaka and called tipitaka in pali is also called the pali canon which is more known by after the language in which it was first written the which is pali and the ancient indian language pali is very close to the language that the buddha himself spoke okay the three baskets of wisdom vinaya pitaka the discipline basket a rule book for monks and nuns there are 227 rules for monks

and nuns for monks and more for nuns suta pitaka the teaching basket the actual experience of buddha so that would be i guess like the the bible the new testament bible in a sense uh talking about what jesus said and this is um kind of the same thing i've got some books on this and it is i think it um when i read it it reminds me that i really am into this stuff but uh for some reason i've sort of moved away from it the next one is the abhidhamma pitaka the higher doctrine basket

an explanation on the teaching of buddha most of these are called sutras both mahayana buddhism and theravada buddhism share very similar texts for the first two baskets vinaya and suta and so you've got different types of buddhism different types so you've got three types of scriptures sutras which are discourses which are very long very explained sometimes you know really deeply um they're explained they're not really it's hard to self-interpret a different way because they're very detailed some of the things that the buddhists that have vinaya relating to the rules of monastic discipline uh which isn't

really that relevant i don't think uh in today's world but some people do try and live by that or their own variations of it abhidhamma analytical texts so it's just explaining theravada bosom claims pali sutras are closed are closest to the actual words of buddha mahayana buddhist texts are closer to the spirit of the buddhist teachings written long after the buddha's passing well the pali sutras were written well after long after the buddha's teachings and passing because they didn't have ways to write stuff down back then mahayana sutras um some 600 mahayana sutras have survived

in sanskrit or in chinese or tibetan translation and they're very often said to be secret texts but not written down straight away some are said to have been written by bodhisattva or other buddhas buddhism is in addition to containing sutras and vinaya also contains tantras so you remember the old tantric stuff that's where it came from but hinduism um that's where it came from really other texts important examples of non-canonical texts um this visar demarga or path of purification by buddha gosus which is a common theravada teachings that includes quotes from the pali canon see

i'm really more theravada uh i like things to be clear and precise not open to interpretation you know but i like i like a bit of everything really but not into the ritual stuff because it doesn't do anything for me really i don't think it might just be because i'm a non-spiritual i don't have any spiritual in me but if i read something that i find amazing or you know i do feel it it's not just words it's not just intellectual i feel it i feel it emotionally but there you go uh other texts important

examples of non-canonical canonical texts are the visar demarga of or path of purification by buddha gosu which is a combination of then of course you've got zen buddhism you've got tibetan buddhism tibetan buddha of the dead uh written by another tibetan master and it's you know lots of different ones so it's it's a very huge thing oh i'll just hit the microphone i'm gonna move it back how dare you move it's a happy buddha christmas let me just remember maybe we should all i'd like to convert you all to buddhism please no i think it's

worth remembering at christmas it's not about religion anymore it is if you want it to be anything's about whatever you want it to be about but i think for probably the predominant majority the people who celebrate it it's it's more about family it's more about social getting together it's in a way christmas is probably um probably not that much different to thanksgiving we don't know america has thanksgiving we don't have it here but that getting together kind of giving presents to each other i don't know if you do that on thanksgiving where i'm not sure

but there's something about that congregation and congregating together and being with your loved ones so that's what christmas predominantly is about with probably the majority of people that celebrate it in the western world anyway of course people will argue no it's not it's about yeah it's about that for you but i was talking generally there's a hell of a lot of people from other religions that still celebrate christmas because they realize that it's got nothing to do really well it's not it's got nothing to do with it but it's it's it's an opportunity to get

together and and be with your loved ones and to give presents and who doesn't like presents i like presents i don't get any presents anymore but i like them that's a mistake i made in life i should have had kids lots of them and then they should have had lots and lots of grandkids and their grandkids should have had lots and lots of kids as well so that i would get so many presents every christmas and birthday but i didn't do that i left the world unsullied and and unsullied and which means i don't get

any presents i'll get now i've got two christmas cards that's what i've got this year two christmas cards one from a friend and one from me dad that is it i spent 140 pound about four or five days ago sending out christmas cards to people it was last week actually including a couple of presents three presents two from my parents and one for a friend that's really helped me out a lot this year two christmas cards it's sad really isn't it my 50th birthday was quite good though i had quite a few present not presents

i had quite a few cards sent to me on my 50th birthday but i was kind of asking for them wasn't i please send me a birthday card everybody it's my 50th and then last year i don't remember if i got any in august i don't even remember my birthday last year no i don't remember i know it happened but i don't know this year rather uh it's only a couple of months ago isn't it august september october just under three months ago there was a weird noise that came from over there what was that

about i've just turned around and my knees clicked i was not dislocated i might actually read a bit of uh jesus some of jesus's stories in the new testament over the next few days it's just the print is so tiny because it's one of those little tiny little mini bibles it's a new testament but it was i think it's a gideon's bible and when i got one at school when i was about 13 maybe 12 i read it back back to front or front to back rather i read it all the way through and i

loved it now i might have already read it before because i had a bible that had both the old testament and the new testament in and i had read that and i was brought up a catholic when i was little i used to live i had a church in my garden or uh whatever the version of a church is not cathedral something anyway it's but i had that so i was brought up by catholic nuns for for a few years so i was i did know a bit about the bible i did know about about

the old testament they weren't so concerned about the new testament um which kind of said i mean i imagine some of the things that pre you know catholic priests and nuns have that some of the got up to couldn't really could they really get up to that if they were teaching jesus's it's almost like jesus's teachings that's gotta have an effect on you isn't it so that you wouldn't be able to do stuff horrible stuff but i don't know maybe i'm just being naive even though my feet smell like cheese so uh yeah i might

have a little dip i think what what i'd like is just a more of a an abridged version of these holy books so that you can get rid of the the fluff you know i mean even the bible it starts off he begat he begat he begat he begat he begat they begat this person who begat that person who begat that but i shut up just get rid of that we understand that you know people have babies and then they get older and maybe they have babies yeah we understand that concept but just it's like

let's do the lineage to start with no stop it so get rid of the fluff get rid of the stuff that's no longer applicable or in you know outdated a lot of it is so outdated i mean stuff that stuff that i was taught the way that i was taught to behave words i was taught to use are out so many of those are outdated now and it's very difficult to keep up with it all to the point where i'm probably going to end up like some older people who just give up and it's and

it seems like they're they're just these cantankerous you know refusing to grow with the times and they're still using old language which might be cast as racist or sexist or homophobic or whatever but actually a lot of them have just had enough of being told how what what language to use because the language they're using now used to be acceptable it was just normal day-to-day language and it's changed over the years and so many changes just like it seems that every week another word is no longer applicable and i got a friend who says you

shouldn't use the word deaf anymore yet i see it being used all the time not all the time just you know but i just see it still being used it's not a derogatory word it's just a it's just a word but you know you know hard of hearing or hearing hearingly challenged or i don't know what the correct terms are anymore and i don't care actually because if i was i'm partially i've got partially deafness in one ear partially now if i became deaf in that ear i would say i was deaf in that ear

who's going to challenge me on that one i'll talk about myself you can't call yourself a oh actually yeah you can can't you yeah i can call myself what i want so yeah i just i just don't want to be like that i don't want to end up saying that's it i've had enough of the all these different like he she i don't know anymore it's just confusing i'm just gonna go back to how i used to talk and then start using words that are really offensive and not acceptable anymore i know people that still

talk like that and i'm pretty sure they do it purposely because they know it's unacceptable they know that it's just unacceptable in today's society and they refuse to change even though i know someone that is that language wasn't even acceptable since he's been 10 years old but he uses it because that's what you know he wants to stick to that old old style of being it's just oh okay which is fine but it's hard it's hard to hear sometimes because it is some of the words that we used in the past to describe people i

find them a bit grating a bit oh that just feels wrong just to talk like that i'm not approved i'm no i'm not approved no oh i might listen to the uh the quran on audible maybe listen to it the only thing is if i fall asleep i don't want to sort of be in absorbing it i don't absorb stuff that i'm not aware of if you know i mean i want to i want to choose my beliefs not be have it going into my unconscious mind while i'm asleep or when i'm drifting off i

want to be able to i don't want to start having extreme views i mean for me part of my journey my journey because i had this i sound like one of those it's my journey part of my experience and what my aim in life is to get rid of as many views and opinions as possible strong ones you know i can waffle on about nothing for an hour and i can it might sound like i've got strong views and opinions but i really don't care about any of this stuff i don't care i don't care

about religion i don't care you know but it's it's mildly interesting at times don't not really care about much really as far as opinions go but i you know it's sad to talk about in it but i want to get rid of those you know those limiting beliefs get them gone get them oh i keep banging the microphone where i want to go because i'm bored now so i'm probably going to do a record do a recording i might even do a live broadcast on christmas day so i'll be on my own so i might
