#486 Let me bore you to sleep

Hello and welcome to jasonnewland.com. My name is Jason Newland and this is Let Me Bore You to Sleep. Please only listen when you can safely close your eyes. Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep.

It's Monday the 31st of August 2020 and I've made, I've done a few recordings today which is good. I'm using, I've got a new microphone setup which I mentioned probably yesterday and I'm quite pleased with it actually because now that I've recorded a few different sessions I've realised that not only is the quality of the sound much better, the time that I'm not talking like now is also much quieter than before.

So this microphone tends to pick up pretty much just what's in front of it which is I suppose why it was expensive but I've had the microphone for a while, a year or two, yeah a couple of years, over two years in fact, but I've had it in storage because I used to use it with the laptop and the laptop was just buzzing so it was, you know, the only way it worked is if I had the laptop, you know, like in another room or, you know, so the microphone is far away which could explain why the lead is so long because, you know, earlier on I did a deep sleep whisper recording.

I actually did take the microphone into the bedroom and left the iPad and the recorder and all the mixer and stuff, all that stuff on the table in the living room so it's quite a long lead but in the process I didn't realise I must have loosened one of the wires or one of the connections because when I was about an hour and a half ago I made a recording the relaxation for stress and anxiety podcast and three calls away in the sound went and then the sound started again so I had to cut a big chunk out I think it might be due to a connection that was a bit loose but I'm not sure.

All I know is it was unusable because it sounded like there was loads of like fuzzy background sound and there wasn't, you know, in reality there wasn't. There wasn't, there wasn't, there wasn't, there wasn't.

Stop telling me there was because there wasn't. So yeah, I'm quite pleased with the setup. It's, I know I've mentioned it, you know, probably for a couple of days but I've only got the thing yesterday, didn't I? And I've got the battery today for the video microphone.

I just haven't put it in yet so I need to, I'm going to look at that soon and see whether or not I could do something with that. Maybe have that set up in the bedroom. I don't know.

But yeah, I'm pleased, I'm pleased with this. It's the, it's the best sound quality that I've probably ever had. Well, no it's not but it's without having to sort of have the laptop in a different room that is.

Because I did set it up a couple of years back to do it that way but it's just not, it's not viable. So it's just, it's weird because, well the laptop's gone anyway. And with perseverance and, you know, some research and a bit of patience, I'm kind of learning to do everything that I need to do on the iPad.

It's been a bit of a learning curve or whatever you want to call it. I couldn't be bothered with it. Just the whole learning to edit with a different software, how to save files, where to save them, storing them, uploading them, all the different things.

It's a whole different process. But I suppose one of the benefits is, for me, is I'm fairly productive. I'll make quite a few recordings in a week, which means I'm constantly, I'm constantly doing the same thing over and over again.

So I'm learning it's always becoming quite easy really. Even the editing, now it's a heck of a lot easier because the microphone's not really picking up much in the way of background sounds, which is phenomenal. I don't even have to have the kitchen door closed anymore.

Yes, when I heard stuff, I was doing a recording earlier and I heard background sounds. It was actually banging in the ceiling from the birds in the loft. Microphone didn't even pick it up.

And I listened, you know, I actually pretty much listened to the whole recording. And I'm like, wow, wow, man, this is groovy. See, I'm quite pleased.

The only thing is I'm sitting at the desk and it's not, it's not uncomfortable, but it's a little bit restrictive. I like to sit down on a chair and relax, although I'm still relaxed. But at the same time, I want to keep an eye on the recording software on the screen in front of me to make sure it doesn't do what it did earlier.

Because there's a possibility it could have been the software rather than the hardware that caused that problem. I don't know enough about it all. I suppose when it comes to the technology, I'm I'm proficient-ish, yet at the same time, kind of, I don't know, maybe making it up as I go along a little bit, you know, I found, I find a setting that works and then I just leave it.

When actually I could possibly, the thinking about it, I've got the other recorder that I could record stuff on, which means I could possibly do an even better job than it is. But I think it's quite good. I think it's fairly okay.

The thing that I've got missing is a headphones. Because I can't hear myself, but I can hear my voice. I can't hear how the microphone is picking up my voice whilst I talk.

So I ordered some studio headphones for the mixer box that I've got. So there's a headphone socket in there, so with a volume. So what I'm going to do, that should arrive in a couple of days.

And then I'll be able to listen to myself when I'm talking. One of the benefits of that is if it is, if there's a distortion or if there is that was weird. I just, I just heard a scratching, but it was on the floor.

It better not be a mouse. I won't be happy if it's a mousey. I think Andre's fast asleep.

He has his periods when he's just, he's just honestly, he's just unconscious. I don't even, you wouldn't even know he lived here, apart from the mess. You wouldn't know that he was here because it's so quiet.

And then he wakes up and I was really happy at the moment because I've now got the vacuum cleaner in my bedroom. Because what I've been doing, you know, I was using it in the hallway, near the front door. And he loves the vacuum cleaner.

He loves scratching it, biting it, trying to get inside it, pushing it over, banging it against the wall, the door, all that stuff. He loves it. Doesn't like it when it's turned on necessarily, but not that he's scared, but he just, yeah, I think what it is, cause I used to try and suck him up when he was little.

Not suck him up, but you know, like getting stuck by his fur to the thing, just for fun. Well, maybe that's wrong. I don't know.

Wasn't going to hurt him. He wasn't little enough to actually go through the, to get sucked up the funnel. Can you imagine that? Wow.

Oh, but no, he was too big for that, but I'm not sure if I accidentally did it, but he didn't like it. So he kind of keeps away from it. Maybe that's what it is.

Ever since then, it's been his mortal enemy and that's why he attacks it. He does, he really goes for it. Anyway, so he's got that, which means he's going to be, yeah, I might have to move it out of the way when I go to sleep.

So I got my new carpet cleaner from the catalog. It arrived on Sunday and I couldn't be bothered to open it. I just, I thought, oh no.

So I waited till today, opened it up, had to assemble the thing, but I did it, it didn't involve, all I did was just run out to the front door. What was I going to say? Yeah, it involved three screws. Hello Andre, you all right mate? And so I did that, had a little bit of trouble, a little bit of trouble with getting the, there's two compartments, two plastic compartments, one where the water with the carpet liquid cleaner liquid goes in.

And then there's another compartment below where all the dirty water goes into it. So it's, Andre, can you shut up? And it's very similar to the one I had before, which broke, but it's different. It's not exactly the same at all.

There's quite a few differences. So what I'm going to do with this one is I'm going to be really careful with it because what broke the last one was the loose bits of carpet thread that tangled it all up and I went to untangle it. And the motor, I don't know what it's called, but the belt on the motor was broken.

Now I took it apart to see if I could fix it. I didn't know what was going on. There is a chance that I actually cut the belt by accident because I was using scissors trying to get the bits of carpet out of the brush part of the cleaner.

So I think ultimately I probably broke it myself, but I don't like to take responsibility. So I've got this new one and I decided to clean. I'll start with the front door bit, which is pretty filthy.

So I've vacuumed it, the whole of the hallway, and I did one load. So I could drop one load onto the floor, not dropped it, but you know, used it. So one mixture of the carpet cleaner.

I don't know why that's funny. I don't know why Ombudsman is eating the dry food. Is he eating all of his food? I'm going to turn around.

Isn't that weird? He's got wet food there, but he's still deciding to eat the dry food, which is kind of a good thing because he does need to eat the dry food. He's a little sensible little monkey. So I used one load of water in the mixture.

It's basically warm, not hot, but warm water, kind of more lukewarm, but a little bit warm with the mixture. I just did, it wasn't a large portion of the carpet, but it's filthy, really needed. In fact, it's not finished.

It needs to be gone over probably another two times, but it's definitely better than what it was. So what I'm going to do and I'm going to have another go tomorrow, but a different part of the carpet. And I'm going to do, probably every day I'll do a different part of the carpet, like in the flat, mainly the areas that, you know, he, that I put paper down for him.

And then I'll look to do other parts of the carpet as well, but I want to get those parts as clean as I can, because you can see the difference straight away, like in the color of the carpet. Now the hallway is going to have a little bit of dirt, I guess anyway, because I'm coming in from being outside and my shoes and stuff, and I'm not someone that's going to take my shoes off. Ever, in any situation, my shoes stay on.

I mean, I don't want them in bed or in the bath. I want to go swimming. But I, yeah, I always wear my shoes in there.

I'm not, I'm not one of these people that says, oh, you can only come in, take your shoes off. Yeah, no. In fact, I don't think I'd even enter a house if I had to take my shoes off now.

I used to be quite forthcoming with that stuff, but not now. Saying that I have to do that when I go out and dance. Take your shoes off.

Why? I'm not brave enough to say that to his face, but take my shoes off. I like having my shoes on. I've never been so angry.

Especially if I was in, like, somewhere like America or, or, I don't know, Australia, where there's creepy crawlies. I'd like to have stuff on my feet all the time. And wear big, heavy gloves, probably.

I'd like to reserve a crocodile. No, I wouldn't. Why? No.

I came up with a saying earlier. What was it? Yeah, the kids, the kids outside playing on skateboards, and they're falling over and hurting themselves. So it kind of makes up for the noise, really.

And they're got no padding on or anything. And my friend was saying, oh, he could hurt himself one day. And I was thinking, well, it's kind of their fault, really.

You know, you don't jump out of a plane without a parachute, dear. You have to have a parachute on. Otherwise, you're going to expect to not land properly.

You don't jump over ramps on a skateboard without... I don't know. See, in my, in my day, in my day, which is when skateboards became popular, they used to sell us, arm, elbow pads, knee pads, helmets, all kinds of stuff. Which is quite cool.

Head, yeah, head guards. That's it. I'm just trying to think, did the kids ever wear them though? I want to talk about the kids.

I'm talking about the ones that were outside my house when I was a kid. I lived next to, actually, there's two lads that live next door to me, and they were both trendy. They were like the cool, the cool dudes.

And they, they were in with all the cool people, but in my school, not in my brother's school, because I went to different high schools. So I was friends with them, you know, as far as like, I think I was probably friends with the younger one more, because I did some kickboxing with him. So we kind of had like, had a punch up.

So we kind of, not a proper punch up, but you know, with pads and stuff on, but kickboxing. And I think he was, I think he might have been two years younger than me, actually. I don't know, bigger than me.

And then his brother was like a year younger than me. And they were cool. But the reason I mentioned it is because they had all the stuff.

They had the BMXs when it was cool. They were doing breakdancing properly, when it was cool, you know, all this time when it first came out. And BMXs as well, when it was cool.

When the film BMX Bandits came out and breakdanced the movie, was it a breakdancer movie? And there was probably movies with skateboarding in. Although the only thing I could think of was Back to the Future. Maybe Ferris Bueller's Day Off? I don't know.

Not sure if there was that much with skateboards. There probably was a lot. I just can't think of anything.

But you know what? Breakdance the movie was brilliant. Seriously. I know it's a generational thing.

And I'm sure that every generation thinks that their generation had something special. You know, so maybe every generation who, like the early teens, it's kind of an important time. Maybe musically or socially.

Andre, do you have to do that right now? Really? I think I only like him when he's asleep. And he's banging the microphone stand. He's gonna wind me up.

It doesn't matter if he bangs a microphone stand when I'm not talking. Because I can edit that out. I can edit that out.

But if he does it while I am talking, I can't edit it out because it's part of the sound. If I'm going, let's say it's part of the, and he goes, bang, as I say the, and you've got this. But as an example, I can't separate the bang and the the that I said, unless there is a way of doing it.

I'm not sure. There might be. Andre's now in the bedroom, attacking the vacuum cleaner.

So I just paused the recording. I've gone into the bedroom. He's hiding from me.

Behind the door in the bedroom, where the Hoover is, the vacuum is. So I pick up the vacuum cleaner. He's holding on to the end of it.

So I pick it up. And I've taken it into the hallway. So now it's where I want it to be.

He won't want to mess with it. Because if it's not annoying me, it doesn't give him any pleasure, I don't think. Hence why he's coming here and he's gone to sleep.

He's sneezing himself to sleep. And as I go out, what do I see? The part of the carpet near the front door that I cleaned with the carpet cleaner. It's got paper down there.

He hasn't touched the paper. But on the carpet, big fresh poo. So the bit of the carpet that I've not cleaned, he doesn't want to go anywhere near a clean carpet.

It's been a while. When he was little, I've actually seen him physically react to a new smell. For example, what was it? I took him somewhere.

I think it was when he went down to my friend's flat. And he wanted to go onto the settee. Never been on the settee before.

He was smelling it. And he was literally pooing and weeing. I don't know if he was so excited or his natural reaction of all the smells just got the better of him.

Or he was marking his territory. I don't know what it was, but he just lost it. Yes, it was very awkward.

Luckily, you know, he did it where my friend normally sits. It's his flat. But luckily he was in the kitchen cooking some dinner.

So I left quickly. Just said, I've got to go now, see you. I wonder what happened.

Honestly, he's now in the hallway. So he's going to be going back to the vacuum cleaner. Now that I'm not paying any attention.

Or that I'm not paying him any attention. As you can hear it. And I really don't want him doing that.

Late at night. Even though I shouldn't really be bothered. He's going to use that as a way to wake me up.

I know he will. He loves the vacuum. I think he'd get inside the vacuum cleaner if he could.

That's what he really wants. He wants to, he wants to get into the beast of the belly. Belly of the beast rather.

sleeping deeply, today I had 1,168, ah, but the sleep insomnia hypnosis, I've had 1,440 downloads today, 3,39, 3,20, so the only other one is the let me bore you to sleep, yeah, kind of average, just under 300, 180,000 now, 886, yeah, between all the different podcasts I get about 1,000, 1,000 downloads of the let me bore you to sleep podcasts because they're shared on other podcasts as well, I just want to point that out because it's important, it's important to me, yes, very much so, oh yes, oh, oh yes, so important, yeah, that's that's cool,

yeah, so I've got no messages to read out, you know sometimes I've gone through periods when I've had loads of messages, so maybe people have stopped listening to me or they just have no messages, yeah, I don't know, it's up to you, I mean I do, oh, did you hear that, that was a bit of a, that was an internal burp, I think it's, oh, it's another one, that was a throat, that was a throaty burp, throaty, oh, oh, oh, so yeah, I think it's gonna take, it's gonna take all week to get the carpet

clean, but I don't want to spend all day doing it and just doing that one bit of carpet after vacuuming it and then cleaning it with a machine, I was sweating, honestly, I was, basically I was sweating in such a way that if you walked into a restaurant and you had a waiter come up to you sweating the way I was sweating, you'd want to leave the restaurant, you wouldn't want someone like that serving you food, that's how profusely I was sweating, you know, you'd basically receive your food in a little paddling pool, oh, that's

nice, yeah, so here's what I've been doing, I've been watching Cobra Kai on Netflix, I love it, I love it, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love it, and for those that don't know what it is, basically, it's the characters from the Karate Kid movie, like 30, 40, 35 years later, yeah, 35 years later, something like, yeah, something like that, and it's really, really clever, the way they're putting it together, because the baddie, the kid who was the baddie in the first film is almost like the star or the hero of this film,

but he's not at the same time as the Karate Kid's the hero, so they're both the stars, but you can see how, it's almost like you get to see a different perspective of what happened back then, and how it affected their lives, because the Karate Kid went on to be really successful, and he had, you know, 35 years later, he's got a big successful car dealership, lives in a big house, happy family and all that stuff, and the baddie boy, the blonde one, has grown up, and he's almost, well, he's what he likes to call

other people, loser, you know, he's kind of lost his way, and I don't want to spoil the plot, but at the beginning, he has lost the plot in a big way, and then it's him and the Karate Kid start to kind of, their lives start to entwine again, after all that time, and it's really weird how they're flipping it on its side, so that, you know, it's almost like the good kid is turning into the bad kid, and the bad girl is turning into a good girl, and the bad kid is turning into a good

kid, and it's just really, and the bad man, who used to be the bad, he was the baddie in the original Karate Kid, who was the little boy, well, he wasn't a little boy, he was 20 or something, and he's the one that had the final fight with, with what style, was it praying mantis, I don't know, you know the Karate Kid stands on just one foot, and puts his arms up like a crane, is it the crane style or something, and the, he's almost, it's quite weird, because he's, he's tough, and he's, you know,

he's had a tough life, and he starts a dojo, and, you know, another karate school, calls it the Cobra Kai, like it used to be called, when he was a kid, and he starts to sort of soften, and the young kid that he's teaching, who was being bullied, is sort of educating him, you know, he's starting to be a bit educated in what not to say, and you to see things differently, but in the process, the boy that he's teaching is starting to become hardened, and the girl that he's teaching starts to become hardened, and

another boy as well, is, and they were all pretty much being picked on at the beginning of the series.

It's really, it's really clever, honestly, it's very, it's a delight, as some parts, some parts of the world like to say, I'm delighted, I'm delighted, I'm, I am so delighted, I'm delighted, I've never said I'm delighted in my life, but today, I'm delighted, and it's really good, I like it a lot, it's really, it's, it's touching a lot of different parts of me, you know, the emotional part, the nostalgic part, the karate part, because I was a karate kid myself, not like him, I wasn't famous, and I didn't win no tournaments, but I did enter

a couple, but that was a huge inspiration in my life at the time, but let me have a look, I'm not even sure if I started karate before or after it, might have started before, either way, it was still a huge thing, okay, karate kid, karate kid, no, early 80s, because they did two, two other films, 1984, which would be the year that I started doing karate, yeah, I'm pretty sure, release date 31st of August, how weird, that's today, but 1984, it made 100 million at the box office, wow, it cost 8 million to make,

that's dollars, 8 million dollars, and it took 100 million, and according to that, that's just in the US and Canada, it's a bit, what someone said about a karate kid, bloody fly, where are you Mr.

Spider, take this fly away, why don't you go and have a party, someone wrote about the karate kid, and it is the film location for Columbia Pictures, karate, oh yeah, karate kid 2, a sequel to Hollywood's biggest sleeper of 1984, the karate kid, the karate kid surprised almost everyone by amassing a domestic gross of 100 million, that's phenomenal for a modest film with no stars, and a title that sounded like a combination of Bruce Lee and kid flick, whatever that is, however, Elizabeth Hsu went on to be a big star, didn't she, yes she did,

yes she, yes, yes she did, and so she was in the karate kid, adventures in babysitting, don't remember that, cocktail, huge film, back to the future part 2, she wasn't in the first one though, back to the future part 3, leave in Las Vegas, huge, holo man, that was a big film, and piranha 3D, okay, wow, was she also, oh okay, she's in a few others, oh she was in Death Wish, the 2018 version, which was a good, good version, that had Bruce Willis, oh she was also in the Amazon series The Boys, which was

a really, really good show, 2019, and she's in the film Greyhound, so yeah, she's a big star, wow, she's a star, had been in a lot of really good films, awards and nominations, oh, she won the best young supporting actress in a motion picture, musical, comedy, adventure, or drama, for the karate kid, she won that, oh come on, I'll be honest with you, I'm not enjoying The Fly, wow, there's a picture of Katy Perry, brilliant, absolutely brilliant, um, it's, very funny, she is funny, wow, I'm not saying that I love Katy Perry, but, I do,

I love her, wow, who's there, oh gosh, she's got another film, another one, right, I should talk really, rather than just be looking at pictures of Katy Perry, I can't help it, oh, I'm sorry, no, that's, that was just, okay, I'll move on, all right, I'm gonna get away from that, I wasn't supposed to be, I wasn't actually looking at that, I was looking at, what's her name, Elizabeth Shue, she won the best actress, okay, it doesn't say what it's for, okay, okay, okay, Leaving Las Vegas, brilliant film, and she won the, she was nominated

for academy awards, best actress, didn't win it, but she was nominated, which is good, and I'm pretty sure, oh, did Cage win the Oscar for that, I gotta find out now, I can't 100% remember, he did, he did win an Oscar, yeah, so he won an academy award for his performance in Leaving Las Vegas, well deserved, brilliant, brilliant film, and one of the only films I actually like him in, not like him, but enjoy his performance, another one would be when he wins a lottery, no, there's two, one is when he wins a lottery, and

he promises, I think he goes into a shop, or store, and says, if I win the lottery, I'll give you half, and he wins it, and he gives a half, love that film, but then I like the premise of it, I like the idea of it, and then he was in another film where he woke up, and he, I think he was a single man, and he wakes up one day, and they've got a family, and really happy, and you know, something like that, I can't remember, I should look at what it is now, I'll

be able to tell you, that's gonna bug me otherwise, he married Lisa Marie Presley, and Patricia Arquette, wow, cool, um, career, the thing is with, because of Nicolas Cage, because he's been going for about 150 years, they have to have a separate page for his films, so let's go back to the 90s, I think, uh, it could happen to you, yeah, that's the one, it could happen to you, I would say, trapped in paradise, yeah, a Christmastime New York restaurant manager, Bill Firpo, uh, Nicolas Cage, brothers, Dave and her, are paroled early and placed in

Street executive in New York City, at work he is putting together a multi-billion dollar merger, and has ordered an emergency meeting on Christmas Day, in his office on Christmas Eve, he gets a message to contact Kate, but even though he remembers her, he dismisses it, apparently uninterested, on his way home, he is in a convenience store, when a young man, Cash, enters claiming to have a winning luxury ticket, worth 238 dollars, but the store clerk refuses him, saying the ticket is a forgery, Cash pulls out a gun, isn't it funny his name's Cash, pulls out

a gun and threatens him, so Jack offers to buy the ticket, and Cash eventually agrees, outside Jack tries to help Cash, to which he responds by asking Jack, if anything is missing from his life, Jack says he has everything he needs, whereupon Cash, enigmatically remarks that Jack has bought upon himself, what is now going to happen on walks away, a puzzled Jack returns to his penthouse and sleeps, on Christmas Day Jack wakes up in a suburban New Jersey bedroom with Kate and two children, he rushes out to his condo and office in New York, but

both doormen refuse his entrance and do not recognize him, Jack runs out into the street and encounters Cash driving Jack's Ferrari, although Cash offers to explain what is happening, all he says is a vague reference to the organization and that Jack is getting a glimpse that will help him to figure out for himself what it's about, Jack slowly realizes that he is living the kind of life he might have had if he had stayed in the United States with Kate as she had asked, he has a modest family life where he is a car tire

salesman for Kate's father and Kate is a non-profit lawyer, Jack's young daughter Annie thinks he is an alien, Jack's young daughter Annie thinks he is an alien but a friendly one and assists him in fitting into his new life, with a few setbacks Jack begins to succeed bonding with his children, falling in love with his wife and working hard at his job, taking advantage of a chance meeting with his former boss Chairman Peter Lasseter comes in to have a tire blowout fixed, he impresses him with his business savvy and Lasseter invites him to his office
