Hello and welcome to jasonnewland.com. My name is Jason Newland. This is Let Me Bore You To Sleep. Oh yes, it really is.
Please only listen when you can safely close your eyes. It's a weird old setup, you know, the whole microphone trying to get it at a volume setting that is conducive for a podcast because I've had to turn the recording volume down quite a lot. In order to block out the background sound.
The, you know, the sound in between the words. It should pretty much be nothing. But I did a whisper recording earlier.
Bearing in mind to whisper is really quiet anyway. So I kind of needed to turn the volume up a little bit on the recording and it was, I don't want to say static, but there was sound, you know, between the words that I spoke or that I whispered. So yeah, so hopefully this will be alright.
I'll make the recording and then I'll increase the volume. Hopefully it should be okay. I guess in a way I'm still in the testing phase of this.
So it's a new setup. Before I just turned the tablet on, I had the microphone all set up and I just recorded and that was it. Now I'm sitting at my table.
I've got the microphone practically in my face. It's just a few inches away from, now it's just a few inches away from my mouth. Yeah, so it's a little, I don't want it right in my face, you know, I don't want it inside my mouth.
But I need to have a little bit of freedom, you know. So it's 15 minus 45 minus, it's probably about half the volume that it should be. So when I increase it, it should go up to the volume I need it to be, regardless of what volume it is.
Because it's minus 16 dB, I don't know what that stands for. But that's what happens when I finish the recording and edit it. I amplify the volume.
So it should technically be alright. But I had a few problems with the microphone earlier, getting it set up. But that might just be because I haven't used it for a few days.
Yeah, it's been about three days, which in my world is a long time between recordings. I'm usually fairly irregular, as a lot of you will know. I'll take my glasses off.
And I'll put my other glasses on so I can actually see my phone. Yeah, see what messages I have. Molly, Molly, Molly, Molly sent me a message.

Hi Jason, the new mic is great. I was so relieved to find out that I wasn't going deaf. As I'd had to put the volume up quite high when I listened before.
About the ads, they don't blast out. Wish people would show some understanding. And can't you have... I can't do it.
Wish people would show some understanding that you have to raise money to pay for all the costs. I'm sure the ones who complain wouldn't like it if they were prevented from funding their bills. Make me so cross.

I think part of the reason why the adverts are not as loud, or don't seem so loud, is because I have increased the volume of the actual recordings. Does that make sense? So from that angle, I think it's the quality of the recording, the volume of the recording, which, according to the podcast host, when I contacted them about the volume of the adverts, they gave me the specifications of what I should be aiming for, volume-wise, on the actual recording, so that the adverts didn't seem so much louder. However, in reality, as someone pointed out, I forget who it was now, adverts generally are always louder.
Even on TV, radio, the adverts seem to be louder than the program itself. There's nothing I can do about that. Well, there is.
There's nothing I can do about the volume of the ads. I've done a lot, I would say, to try and improve everything. So I'm trying to improve the quality of the sound, trying to improve the volume so that the volume is more equal to the volume of the adverts.
For those that don't like the adverts, I've created a new podcast which, again, is costing me more money, which means I need to have the adverts. It's wonderful! However, getting rid of, by changing... I'm going to keep that podcast, even if I keep the other website. But I kind of miss the other website, if I'm honest.
Isn't that weird? And I do have another domain name. JasonNewlandPodcast.com So I thought about maybe having this podcast under that domain name. This new podcast.
But now, I'm thinking perhaps I should just have it as my website. That seems to make more sense. As... Hello, Andre.

I press pause on the recording so you didn't have to hear the squeaky, squeaky chair. I bend down to pick him up and he runs away. He steps back, just so I can't get to him.
He is like a Kung Fu master. Because that's one of the things with Kung Fu is... It's about distance sometimes. He just steps back, knowing that he's out of range.
You know? Doesn't panic, doesn't like run. He just... You're my little ninja. He's got the moves, I tell you.
He's got the Kung Fu moves. So, I only did... I did Kung Fu twice. I want to tell you that I did Winged... What was it? Praying Mantis Kung Fu.
For years and years. And I wish I had. That's one of my regrets in life.
Because... You might think, how can that be a regret? I've got others, don't worry. It's not a regret. Wow, there's so many.
A lot of them seem to involve women. I think as I got older... And... Uglier. I just... It's like, oh... I used to be... I don't want to use the word popular, but I did alright.
Andre's giggling. He doesn't believe that I ever did anything. I did, I used to.
I used to do alright. But as I've aged, I've had to sort of try to... Try to create some kind of personality for myself. Because I didn't used to need it.
When you're just... Like a model, just walking around. People just getting excited seeing you. You know how it is.
Praying Mantis. Praying Mantis Kung Fu. Was... Oh, let me tell you about it.
And... Let me see. When I was doing karate, when I was a kid. I was doing... Yeah, I was reading every single martial arts book.
I need to move this chair closer. To the microphone, I was a little bit far away there. I listened and I watched... You want to go for a walk, don't you? Yeah? That's the only reason you'd be hugging and cuddling me for so long.
Because you want something. Yeah, I know. I know you.
I know you so well. Yes, I do. Yes, I do.
If we are going to go out, we need to go out before it gets dark. Because I don't like going out in the dark. No, I don't.
So... There was a few different styles of Kung Fu that I was really interested in doing. By reading these magazines. And I also bought books on them as well sometimes.
Two was the two different styles. There was the monkey boxing. Where there was... The instructor lived in Australia.
And I was very interested in going and doing that. Moving to Australia and learning and training with him. To become a monkey boxer.
The other one was praying mantis Kung Fu. And that was Chinese Kung Fu. And I wasn't sure where he was based.
But he had been to China. And lived in China for many years. And learned to become a Sifu.
You know, for praying mantis. And I think he brought it to the UK. That's why he was quite well known in the martial arts circles.
Because he brought that style of Kung Fu here. Well... You want to get down? Alright. Let's have a little drink.
Well, well, well. He... What's that noise? Isn't that Andre? It's really weird doing this and I've got my headphones on. And... Can I hear him? I suppose I can hear myself a bit.
But I can also hear background sounds with the headphones on. And at the moment I can hear Andre with his slipper. That's what he's going to be doing for the next hour probably.
Anyway. I... When I moved... To London. I was walking down.
Probably the second time. I moved 89, came back 90, moved back 91. So the time that I wasn't in London was a really good time.
I was living at my dad's for a little while. From April to about... Probably August actually. Then I got myself a little studio apartment which I really liked as well.
And then I... Stopped working. And had to get out of there and everything. But... The first part of that year was good.
From April or March. Late March, April to the summer. Really good summer.
And anyway. When I went back to London in 91. 1991.
I was walking down the Romford Road. Because I lived in Stratford. And the Romford Road led to... Stratford basically.
It led to Romford. But you know, it led... If you'd walk down one end, you'd end up at... The opposite pretty much, the Stratford Station. The Stratford Shopping Centre and stuff.
If I'm correct. I'm trying to get... I'm trying to visualise it in my mind. Yeah, pretty much.
Well, it leads to Stratford anyway. And then you turn left and that... If you go up there, it leads up to Myland. Anyway, I was walking down... Romford Road.
Probably... Because there's a... There's a part which is just around the corner. From the library, Stratford Library. I don't know if it's still there.
And then a little bit further up on the right-hand side, Romford Road, there's... The University of East London, I think. If I'm... Again, it might not still be there, or it might be bigger, or I don't know. And I think you could walk up that way and also get... Yeah, you could get to Forest Gate.
Which I lived in as well for a while. So, 91, I was living in Stratford. I walked past this building.
And I saw a sign. Don't worry, this isn't going to be a biblical story. I saw... I saw a bush that was on fire.
I saw a hairy bush. I saw... I... No, it was just a... It was a doorway. I saw a doorway.
You know what? With my headphones on, Andre banging around... Literally, on the floor, sounds louder... Than it normally does when I'm just sitting on the other side of the room. Without any headphones on. Isn't that strange? I don't know.
I don't mind. Now, I hear a plane in the background. A plane in the background.
Yeah. So, I... I saw this doorway and there was a sign. Praying Mantis Kung Fu.
Bearing in mind, it had been... 1986. 1986 was the last time I'd even thought about praying Mantis Kung Fu. So, you know, five years at least.
Which you might say, well that's not a long time. Five years is a long time... When you're 20. You know, it is a long time.
Now, I mean... I have poos that last that long. But, you know, back then, five years was quite a bit of... It was a distance. It really was a big chunk of... I mean, what? 5, 10, 15, 20... It was a quarter of my life, wasn't it? At that time.
So, I saw this sign, Praying Mantis Kung Fu, and I thought... Oh. Wow. And the door was open.
Well, I think it had shutters or something, but it was... There was a gap, so I got in. And... I... Went... Into the door. And it was big.
It was like a... I don't think it was the only thing in there. I just... I just had a knock at the door then. So... I pressed pause on the recording.
And I have no idea what I was talking about. But I think I have. Yeah, I do remember.
I was talking about the Kung Fu Club. So I go into this... What was it? The... Praying Mantis Kung Fu Club. It's a big... You know, on the end of the wall... There's all these spears and... And it's like, wow.
So... I go in, and I meet the man. The man. Who was running it.
The one that I'd seen in the magazines all those years back. And I said, hello. He said, hello.
And I said... I said, oh, I said, I saw you... In... Kung Fu Monthly or whatever it was. I forget. Back in, you know, the early 80s.
He said, oh. I said, yeah. He said, yeah.
Yeah. And then... I said, I'm... He said, do you want to join the club? And I said, what club? He said, the Kung Fu Club. I said, oh.
I thought maybe you'd be a member of a chess club, and I really don't know how to play chess. He said, why would I be mentioning to join a chess club? I said, it happened to me before. Where? Well, I was at a chess club.
And he just walked away. I said, no, come back, come back. I gave him a cuddle.
And... After I gained consciousness... He gave me a cup of tea. And... He said, yeah, join. So I did.
So I went back. And I did a couple of sessions. A couple of gigs.
A couple of training sessions. And I really liked it. But... At that time... In my life... I had... I think, if I'm honest, I had zero interest in martial arts.
My interest was of a nil. Which is a shame, because it would have been brilliant. If I'd have just stuck at it, I could have got fit.
Well, I was fit anyway, but I could have got a lot fitter. I think it would have helped me mentally, as well as physically. Give me more confidence.
Especially living in a big city. Yeah, I think it would have been really cool. But... For some reason, I just chose not to.
Or I couldn't be bothered. Or other things were more important. And then... He opened up another... Place.
Which was literally around the corner from where I lived. And... I went outside and I went in there. I went with my cousin.
We did a couple of sessions as well. And then... Again... I... Just stopped going. In fact, it was in 2001.
Can you believe this? From 91 to... 10 years later... 2001, I went. And by then I was out of... Shape. I was overweight.
Really. And... I liked it, still. But, you know... I was not in the greatest space, generally.
In my life. And then shortly after that, I moved away from London. But that's one of my little regrets.
That I didn't... Get involved in that. Another one, when I was at a nightclub. In the late 90s.
One of the doorman... Was an instructor at... A karate club. It was Dragon... Well, it might have been Dragon Kung Fu, I forget. But, he invited me to go along.
We got on really well, me and him. And he invited me to go along and... To train. And... Again, I didn't.
So that's... It's a bit of a shame, because that would have been... I mean, that would have been really... You know, if you know somebody. It makes the... The initial experience more enjoyable. Especially if you know the instructor.
The boss. The sensei. The teacher.
Yeah, just like when I went to karate for the first time. In... When I was 14, probably. I only went because my friend was going.
See, my friend's brother was going. And he wanted to... He thought he'd go along. To sort of watch.
To see if it was... You know, see if he liked it. Because his brother kept going on about how great it was. So, I went along.
I asked my friend, Stephan. Can I come with you? And he said... Really? I said, yeah. I said... I can't ever do anything on my own.
Why have you got... I said, yeah, your brother's there. He said, yeah, I know, but... I see enough of you at school. I said, go on.
He said, alright then. So, I went along with him. And we sat on the benches at the side.
And watched it. And it was interesting because his brother was doing it. But also the toughest kid in... The year below mine.
Who was pretty much... He was like real... Well known for being a toughie. He was doing karate as well. So, I was like, oh.
And he wasn't particularly... He was new. He wasn't particularly good at it. You know, he'd only just started.
And no one's good at it when they first start. But it was quite strange to see this... He could probably... You know... He's known for being a fighter. To suddenly... You see him and he's like a white belt.
Without any... Ability. So, that was interesting. Although I didn't tell him.
Anyway, I went back the next... I spoke to the teacher, Paul. And... Me and my friend, Stefan. We went back the next week.
Or the Thursday. So, they used to be open on a Tuesday and a Thursday. Evening.
So, I went back. With him. And... I stayed and Stefan left.
I'm not sure why. But I think he either lost interest. Or he just wasn't... Didn't want to do it anymore.
He was... Pretty much the toughest kid in my year. Stefan was. So, he didn't need to do karate.
To defend himself. You know, he was already... The toughest. Pretty much.
There was two. Him and Carl. Who was another good friend of mine.
And... So, all the way through school pretty much. They were the two toughest kids. But... I don't know why he didn't stay.
But his brother did. And I became a good friend to his brother. And... His brother was really good.
He actually skipped a grade in. We did a grade. I always got first class pass.
So, I had the top you could get. Or so I thought. He went from being a yellow belt.
To being... Or he went from being a white belt. To being an orange belt. Something like that.
He skipped a grade because he was so good. So, you know. I've never known anyone to do that before.
Or since. I've also done other... I did Taekwondo for a while as well. A couple of years back.
But I just remember it's much easier to go to a place if you know somebody. Or if you go with somebody. I find.
It just makes the... The experience... A bit more enjoyable. However, when I went to Taekwondo I went on my own. And... Some people do go with people.
They go with someone else and train. And it's like a new thing. You know.
And they both do it together. And when I started. I started pretty much at the same time as my friend Ryan.
I didn't know him at the time. But I became friends with him there. And he's now... He became a black belt about six years ago.
So, you know. I did the first three or four gradings. I think.
And then I just... I didn't go for a while because I was working. And I was working evenings. Doing shifts and stuff.
And then I... Started going back. And my lower back just couldn't... Couldn't take it anymore. It was a little bit annoying.
And I've been back since. So I'm thinking of a way of getting my back tested to see if there's a way of healing it and getting it flexible. And because I've got my punch bag I'm thinking maybe I'm gonna start kicking the punch bag every day just a little bit just to see if I can loosen my hips up and perhaps strengthen my lower back.
Because if I can kick without hurting my back and when the coronavirus is over I might go back to the taekwondo. I'll probably just start from scratch again. Even though I've got belts I'll go just go back do the white belt and just... One of my dreams in life has been to be a black belt.
Doesn't really matter what it's in. You know if it's karate, kung fu you know that wasn't really the thing. It's about having a black belt in martial art.
And if I did that that would be one of my lifelong dreams come true. So I'm thinking that it kind of perhaps I should just go back and just go through the pain. But saying that it was so painful.
I was nearly crying. I was on the floor lying on the floor nearly crying because it was so painful. Andre shut up.
He's laughing. He's so rude. But I went to a chiropractor and they said oh you know it's wear and tear just your age.
It's wear and tear. Gave me some stretching exercises. But I'd like... I need to do a little bit of research because I know as soon as I start doing well when I did boxing the same I lose weight.
I slim. My waist slims. And I build muscle as well.
So if I do karate, boxing, taekwondo whatever it is I always well karate not so because I was already slim I was only a kid. But taekwondo and boxing I slim down. And noticeably people would say oh I've noticed you're slim when I did Wing Chun in 2004 did that for a while I kind of my kicking was not brilliant but I was able to do it very easily.
So going from not really having kicked since the age of 16 really like regularly to the age of 24 no 34 33 16, 26 18 years 17 years and after a while I got so used to it I'd go there on I think a Monday and a Wednesday but on a Friday they had leg spa so basically it sounds like it's a nice relaxing experience it wasn't basically it was sparring but no hands and you blocked you even blocked with your legs over your hands and your arms so basically it was legs the whole time
and you go from one person to the next and you'd spar with them and the idea is you learn to block with your legs with your feet for the kicks and stuff like that and I could do it I could do the 2 hours training it was tiring but I could do it flexibly I mean so maybe that's what it needs I need to find a way to open up my lower back to stretch it to the point where maybe the thing that I need to do is more kicking and because I've got a punch
bag it means I'll have something to actually kick rather than kicking the air because it's much easier if you've got something to kick for me that's what builds balance personally because when I was at the because we had a punch bag at the gym in the YMCA in 2002 I used to go in there on the punch bag and there was a kickboxer who was an instructor at the gym didn't teach kickboxing but he taught me some kickboxing and he was teaching me some kicking moves so I suppose I did do a bit of kicking
